walmart is now selling a computer brand called microtel. you can get them for as cheap as $400 with a 1 gz duron or celeron but no monitor or OS. not a problem as i have an XP install CD and a nice monitor. definately worth the trouble too.
these are the specs of the one i'm looking at:
AMD Duron 1.0 GHz processor
200MHz Frontside Bus
128MB 133MHz SDRAM Memory, supports up to 2GB
40GB Ultra ATA-100 Hard Drive / 5400RPM (total accessible capacity varies depending on operating environment)
52x CD-ROM
3.5" Floppy Drive
Integrated TRIDENT BLADE 2D/3D graphics
Up to 8 MB shared video memory
3D Enhanced Sound, Integrated
PCI 56K Modem
Micro ATX Tower Case (7.06" W x 14.7" D x 13.8" H)
Total drive bays: External, two 5.25", two 3.5"; Internal, one 3.5"
Available drive bays: External, one 5.25", one 3.5"; Internal, one 3.5"
Available PCI Slots: 2 PCI, 1 ISA
1 High-speed serial port
1 Parallel port
2 USB ports
1 Game port
104 Key Keyboard
2 Button Mouse w/wheel
Audio Port (Line-in, Line-out, Mic-in)
14 Watt (RMS) Stereo Speakers
1 Year warranty, return to Microtel
Operating System - NOT INCLUDED
or i could get it with a celeron. which do you think would be faster. and what do you think about them selling computers without an OS. microsoft is in an uproar about this. |

I think selling them without OS's is PERFECT!
I think those specs scream: WORTH $400!
Yeah, they should make more computers like that. You should still sell complete packages, but packages that are just the tower (Or Keyboard and mouse too) should be sold more often.

for the average person, that would be a horrific ordeal. but for me it's a great way to save $200.
so which do you think i should go for? the celeron or duron? i'm leaning towards duron right now. |

| Celeron.... anything wins against Celeron! |

lol, well it seems like the processor is the weak link in the system, so i'd most likely end up upgrading that(after RAM of course) , so i'm gonna want to find out which has a more upghradable slot type. although if they're the same, you'd think they'd have the same slot |

| Well, I don't believe AMD is better than intel, but It seems like an interresting prospect, and seeing as I have the equivalent of a few rectangular rocks with a piece of glass in the front, nicknamed the pile-of-rocks 2000(BC), it seems like I might want to start shopping at walmart. |

You're gonna wanna upgrade this for Windows XP, i'd say at least 256MB, though i'd reccomend 512MB or more...

Hmm, okay, but i wouldn't buy a 5400RPM Hard Drive

Ugh...this is just disgustingly bad, the MINIMUM these days for a decent gaming rig is 32MB, you couldn't even run any decent games on this, i can't run any decent games on my 16MB card

I personally don't like Micro ATX, as it doesn't offer much upgradeability....
Also, one MAJOR factor i noticed is that this computer doesn't have AGP, you won't be able to get a decent video card for the computer...I probably wouldn't buy this computer... |

Eh, well there's no way I'd buy any sort of computer from a Wal-Mart. Actually, there's no way I'd buy a pre-built system unless it's a Mac, but that's just me. For me it's custom all the way. That way you know exactly what your computer is capable of and is upgradability. I built the computer I use and have built a LOT of computers for customers here. So yeah, go custom if you can. I always say that if you can build your own then do so. Otherwise go with a company that WILL custom build you a PC. Never, ever, ever go with a Compaq or an HP. Out of ALL the computers I work on, they make up about 75% of them. Granted that sometimes it's user error, but more often than not it's equipment failure. Namely the power supply or hard drive. They use cheap parts that don't last long. Gotta be careful of that.
Normally I say go with AMD, but when you compare a Celeron with a Duron, the Celeron would be the better choice IMO. Though, if given other options I wouldn't take either one. Of course, it all depends on what you plan on doing with this system. If you want to play all the high-end games you should go with something a little better. Element is right, it's just not worth it if there's no AGP slot. Upgradability is key. Because by the time you upgrade it to however you want it, you will have probably spent more money than you should have. |

Very Good deal there. specs are slightly dated now. AMD 1 GHz. when there is Pentium 2.2 GHz (although they are probobly the same )
Would purchase this but i am happy with my current pc |
