Alrighty folks, for those of you who don't know, I'm gonna be starting a course at Uni on AI & Robotics later this year. Now, AI just happens to be a greatly controversial topic, portrayed as a bad thing in such films as Terminator and the Matrix. However, those outcomes are not necissarily true - AI can have a massive effect when it comes to making life easier for us - from such things as intelligent aircraft systems, in a way that the planes can land and take off themselves, even evade missiles, fire missiles at the right time and so on, to robotic housewives with vaccuum cleaners (a personal favourite ). Anyhow, I just want to see what you think about making computers intelligent, allowing robots to think for themselves and so on, hell, your feedback could provide useful later on in my studies

as long as they do my work better i'm ok with it
i'm still gonna smack the computer around though. |

Robotics could put every one out of a job...
I mean if an intelligent computer can fly an aircraft then why would we need a pilot?
Besides, people will get even lazier than they will now. |

| Artificial Intelligence theoretically leads to De-Evolution. |

Hmmm..... Remember the olden days, when the majority of the population spent their lives down mines? Now look at the world - upper class jobs, mainly. People won't need to work so hard if we have machines taking their place. There's bound to be some sort of system where people can keep earning an income without having to do anything - heck, computers might end up doing all our jobs. That would be spiffy
Anyhow, keep yer opinions comin' in.

| If people stop relying on themselves for work then by Darwin's Theory of Evolution, anything not being used over-time is eventually recycled out, so in a sense, if we start depending on AI to do brain-work for us then people will begin to de-evolve. |

Interesting... Maybe it should be kept for the lowest end jobs, those which take up a lot of hassle and aren't paid well, like plumbing and joinering, although I'm sure there'll be some people who would still want to do those jobs.

| I think axeon's (or Darwin) has got a very good point. And humanity do have a tendency to rush into things headfirst, if it CAN be | | | |
