so Apple has just released the AirPort Extreme, a WiFi base station/card combo that uses the new 802.11g standard and boasts speeds of 54mbps. Now that we're getting to a higher bandwidth, will we start seeing more and more of those fabled 'internet cafes' people have been talking about for years? so far, i've seen a few in major cities (ny, for example), and a few hotels that offer wireless service (i was able to pirate some hotel's connection around 59th and 9th last summer).
what does everyone thing? is 54mbps finally fast enough for network admins to start looking into investing in it for major networks (e.g., campuses, office buildings)? and on a side note, does anyone know the frequencies 802.11g operates on? is it still 2.4 GHz (or 2.1 maybe?) like in 802.11b? |
