In an interview with the Nihon Economics News, Square Enix president Youichi Wada gave some insight into SE's strategies for 2007.

Wada said that "the timing seemed right" to support the handheld market, which is a major reason why Dragon Quest IX will be released for the Nintendo DS. He denied, however, that Dragon Quest X was necessarily bound for the DS as well, and that no decisions had yet been made for the series beyond IX on the DS and Dragon Quest Swords on the Nintendo Wii.

Wada also went on to say that Square Enix is hoping to use the Dragon Quest series to appeal to a wider (and younger) audience while still keeping its long-time fans.

Also mentioned was that the company's entire focus has not shifted to the handheld market, but that the release of so many handheld titles was simply the result of good timing. Wada has high hopes for the PS3, despite the criticism the console has received since its release, and that by 2008 things will significantly improve. He hopes that Square Enix will be able to offer its customers a choice in their gaming needs... Casual games (on Wii, DS, and PSP), and High-end games (on the PS3 and Xbox360).
