On Monday, Square Enix made an announcement that more than 250 accounts were permanently suspended for violating the user agreement by using unauthorized third-party software tools for the purposes of gil-farming. Apparently, the investigation had been going on since mid-May, resulting in the discovery of an organized group gathering large amounts of gil and then selling it for real money.
The result of these efforts is the removal of 250 billion gil from circulation in Vana'diel (estimated to be valued somewhere around $4 million in the real world). A previous sweep in February took out 700 accounts and removed 300 billion gil from the game.
Square Enix stressed that gil-farming or RMT (real money trading), as they put it, will not be tolerated, and violations will be dealt with severely in order to ensure fair play within the game.
