GameTrailers.com is currently hosting an interview with Dirge of Cerberus producer, Yoshinori Kitase and the game's director, Takayoshi Nakazato. You can watch the video here.

A full transcript of the interview:

Quote:
Yoshinori Kitase: We had this big base... Compilation of Final Fantasy VII... that we were able to give them a lot of options to do a lot of different things. And he personally likes first person shooters and so this was a chance for him to use the Final Fantasy base and make a first person shooter that he's wanted to do for a long time.

Takayoshi Nakazato: Well, we realized that there are not as many first person shooter fans in Japan. We decided to use the Final Fantasy VII story, which is loved by many people, to use that as a doorway for those people who had never played a first person shooter to come in and try one. And so in the Japansese version we gave them many options to make the the first person shooter easy for them, like auto-scope, auto-locking on the enemies, and then lowering the difficulty level, giving them an easy mode... to make it so that even people who had never played a first person shooter could play it and have fun and also experience the Final Fantasy story which is what they wanted to see.

We have changed many things from the original Japanese version. Some of the things we've changed are Vincent's actions. We've added a double jump, which he didn't have before. He can now do melee attacks and combos in the air while jumping. He can also fire his weapon in the air while jumping. His speed has also increased. Some of the other things we've added... we've removed the easy mode that there was... We had easy, normal, and hard. We've removed the easy and made it normal and hard, and then by clearing normal or hard, you can unlock an extra hard made that wasn't in the original Japanese that has more enemies and tougher enemies. However, you'll be able to use the weapons that you've bought or modified in the normal and hard modes in the extra hard modes.
Also by clearing normal or hard you will unlock extra missions and extra features which were not in the original Japanese game. We have up to 40 new extra missions which are seperate from the actual main story mode. And also by finding and destroying certain objects in those extra missions you'll be able to unlock the character viewer where you can view the 3D models of all the characters and enemies in the game, and art gallery which shows development art... art that was used in development... and also a sound gallery which is all the BGM in the game.

In the original Final Fantasy VII there were a lot of mysteries about Vincent that were not revealed... why he was able to transform into different beasts, why he was sleeping in a coffin in Shinra Manor. In this story, Dirge of Cerberus, those answers will be revealed. Also, there's another underlying story of the Lifestream and what's going on on a global scale with the Lifestream, as well as there's also a little bit of a love story... Vincent's love interest... and we get to learn a little bit about that as well.

Interesting interview. Still not sure whether I'm going to bother with this, though. Probably depends on what kinds of reviews it gets.

I know I'm going to be one of those sad people and buy it regardless of reviews, though I have to say I think it looks interesting at the least.

The general (unbiased) consensus is that it's **** (these changes might fix that slightly, as long as they fix the colission detection too), but I'm such a Vincent Valentine fan-boy that I'm probably going to end up buying the damn thing anyway...
