Certainly not an FFVII killer. It looks pretty but as for the substance probably not so much.

I like that they decided not to put too many towns in it because that would require work; definitely has the makings of greatness about it.

Haha. I like that they made that admission. That it would be too much hard work to do it.

Apparently theres loads of content that they cut out, so i wouldnt be surprised at DLC to try and expand the game more. Especially given the poor criticism it is getting, regarding linearity.

all they need are transsexual protagonists, an evil empire, and ultra over-detailed japanese junk art direction, and the gayest hair styles ever and bam; Final Fantasy 13. who needs towns and shit?

It will be interesting to see how well the overall worldwide sales of FFXIII compare to others in the series, especially with the difference in nature Square Enix have made the game.

Maybe it will make them fasttrack an FFVII remake just to boost profits...xD

Bunch of retards on the first page.
XIII is the worse one so far.

Haven't played XIII yet (will start it in a couple of weeks), but I sincerely doubt it's any worse than II (not IV). That game was just awful in every way imaginable. The GBA/PSP versions made it somewhat tolerable, from what I was told. I'd go as far as to say that I'm glad it remained in Japan back in the Famicom/NES days.

Wasn't too pleased with VIII either.

XIII was horrible, IMO. Sure, the gameplay is fun and it's entertaining to run around and kick ass, but the characters are weak, as is the storyline.

It's way too early to judge this. XIII hasn't even been released yet.

As for VII you have to remember that it was the first Final Fantasy game that broke into the European market on a hugely successful gaming platform and also came out around the same time the internet was becomming more easilly available at a cheaper cost in many parts of the western world so it was also the first time that fans were hooking up with other fans from around the world which is likely why there is a huge amount of nostalgia surrounding FFVII.

And really, for it's time, considering how young the Playstation was then - it was a pretty groundbreaking game for the format.

Now maybe 12 years on Final Fantasy XIII may do the same for a new generation of gamers. Who knows, we will only see once we have the game.
Quoting through the years...I know. But that was a great analysis of the thread's main question. I believe VII has it's mysticism mainly because of the gaming atmosphere when it was released, besides it was a damn good game.

I haven't played XIII too, but one thing I do know: I haven't fell for FF because of its explosive graphics or the badass Dante-like characters. It's a grandmother's point of view, but a soul is what a game needs.

This. I have fallen in love with the series during the SNES era. Back in the day when graphics didn't matter that much, and companies focused on making great games instead. It truly was (along with the Sega Genesis) the Golden Age of gaming.

In fact, I think the series actually started going downhill once it went to PSOne and insisted on giving us 3D, badass characters and CG scenes. Though I did enjoy VII, IX, X and XII, there's just something about IV, V and VI that I enjoyed better.

How old school are we?
I pretty much agree in everything, except that I would say that during PSX era, Square started to become extremely ambtious regarding target public's diversity. In the end, I think it's what happens to everyone whose ambition and desire to maintain a moment forever overcome the enjoyment of creating something...
Happened to The Simpson, happens to everyone in every-day life who tries to maintain a moment alive: the moment changes or dies. Become forced is a way of changing (with an internal denial included).

I was about to create it, but reading the Yevon Arena Rules & Regulations, it seems that no member from any other clan can create his/her own...
I agree with that regulation, though

I think there should be a quota for members wanting to create their own clans: 2 or 3 clans. Not simply being restricted to one clan.
