As of yesterday, the site has changed owners, and Final Fantasy Republic has been bought by SPDude, otherwise known as Yusuf. Edman has been overwhelmed with reality-based issues which is going to take his time away from the forums. In selling the site, the new owner would maintain the site and forums while Edman was gone.
Some of you may be wondering what changes are going to be brought about with the change in ownership. SPDude utilizes sites for Google advertisement revenue. His intent is to maintain the community as well as profitize FFRepublic with this purchase. Many have made plenty of cash via buying out other websites at hefty prices and then mass advertising upon them. However, most of you will never have to see a single advertisement. These ads will be visible only to guests and lurkers; fully-registered members will see nothing.
Edman also wishes FFR the best and hopes for nothing but great things to come from this recent change in events. |

But is it a good thing to enforce member registration and risk having tons of members yet not that much more forum activity? Furthermore, what about people who ocasionally come just for Final Fantasy information and not truly for the forums...it is rather annoying for them.
But eh... |

Adblock.
I think it's still too early to really say whether it's a good or a bad thing. The Google ads, while Google isn't all that bad itself, is bad. Not just cause it looks rather horrendous, plastered right in the middle of the screen where normally site content and news would appear, but also because the only advertisements you get are about buying FFXI gil, which by the way is also illegal.
The rest... well, outside the fact that the default amount of posts per page in a thread has been set to a smaller amount (probably for SEO reasons), nothing much has happened. Well yeah, Edman made a ****load of money on selling it. |

Nobody is being forced to registered.
Also, the ads are going to be cleaned up and put on the site in a far more accesible manner than the current set up (if you log out and go to the main page, you can see what they're like right now), but everyone (including spdude himself) agrees that if not implemented properly they will push people away from the site. Expect them to be tidied up within the next couple of weeks.
Edman was already planning to put ad banners on the site eventually anyway, so it shouldn't be that big an issue as long as they're done right.

Yes, and the site was costing him $900 to maintain, and the software developement for the front site and forums cost $3000 by itself, and there was no revenue with which to pay it back with. You don't have a spare four grand handy that you want to throw over, by any chance? |

- THE VAULT WILL BE OPENED SOON -
I'm currently looking for gamers with an interest in the gaming culture and industry outside of Final Fantasy to help with a new, upcoming video game news site. If you think you're interested, please throw a PM my way.
