Hm...this is a bit old, but I love sharing it with other people. It's one of my best writings, I think. ^^ I wrote it back in February for my English III class as a practice thing for our proficiency testing (a passing grade on the tests is one of the requirements to graduate from high school here - I aced the writing part ^_^).
Anyway, the assignment was to write about a picture. Since I don't have a scanned copy of it, I'll just describe it: There's this guy, in his 20s or 30s, laying on the ground, resting on top of a pile of books, like he's using them for a pillow. His ankles are tied with a rope to a weird-looking...thing; a weight or a giant magnet or something. *shrugs* There's a tree in the background, too, and it has some sort of fruit hanging from it. *dunno*
I rated it story and essay since it's...kind of a story, but my teacher had me write it in essay format. -_-;; And I apologize for the lame title - I never had to give it a name, and that was the only one I could think of.
So...yeah. *hides*

He is a prisoner, bound to himself and his books, his most prized possessions. Apparently, there is no dire need for him to be kept here, as the means of keeping him confined are weak. He must not mind being trapped, either -- he is only tied to a large weight with a simple rope; almost anyone could have escaped with the greatest of ease. Perhaps he had himself confined and will let himself go whenever he feels that the time is right. But whatever the reason may be, he is trapped there, perhaps willingly, perhaps not, with his books.
He loves to read, to crack open a fresh, new book and let himself into a completely different world. It seems that he would much rather be in this strange world inside of his head than anywhere else, as beautiful as his real-life surroundings are. His eyes dart back and forth across the pages, unaware of the world around him, of the wind whistling through the branches of the tree beside him, or of the gorgeous sunrises and sunsets that occur every day. For this man, there is just himself and his books.
He is tied to the weight with a great length of rope, enough for him to get up and walk around with. Telling from his great interest in his books, chances are he doesn't get up very often. All he cares about is finishing his current book, starting on the next one, finishing that one, and starting on another. The cycle goes on for what seems like ages.
The fact that he is trapped here does not seem to falter him; if anything, it encourages him to keep reading, to never leave this "other world." He may read simply because he hates the place he is in and wishes to get away. Perhaps this is the way for him to get out of his prison; to read all of the books he carries with him. We may never know.
Like any normal human being, the prisoner gets tired at the end of the day. The excessive reading he does throughout the day must contribute to his drowsiness; he gets so sleepy that he lays his down on his precious books and closes his eyes. As he falls asleep, he discovers another getaway from the "real world" -- his dreams. Either way, he forever lives in his own imagination.
