The Ancients Capital.
Cloud, Tifa and Nanaki went down a long flight of glowing transparent stairwell, towards an unknown destination.
“Cloud, how much further?” complained Tifa.
“Not far. Aeris’ voice is almost on top of me,” replied Cloud.
“My feet hurt,” sulked Tifa.
“Please stop complaining, I’m getting a migraine!” said Nanaki.
They continued down the stairs, and arrived in what seemed like a new dimension. They looked around in stunned amazement at what they beheld.
“Holy Monkeyballs!” breathed Cloud,” It’s amazing…”
“Yeah,” agreed Tifa.
“Wow, wait till Grandpa hears about this!” exulted Nanaki.
They went down a glowing ramp, and they saw the walls and floors were covered in Diamonds.
Cloud ran around picking up Diamonds, and putting them in his bag.
“Let’s go!” shouted Cloud.
They went out of the cave reluctantly, and emerged in a sort of chapel.
They saw a large Lake, and in the middle was an artificial islet. There were large stepping-stones leading to the islet.
On the islet, was Aeris, kneeling down in a position of intense prayer.
Cloud said,” let’s go!”
They ran to the edge of the lake, and Cloud jumped onto a large stepping-stone.
“Follow me!”
They both nodded. As he reached the third stepping-stone, Cloud, for reasons unknown to himself, put up his hand, signalling the halt.
Tifa and Nanaki stopped.
Cloud continued alone. He reached the isle, and looked at Aeris. She seemed radiant, and in silent conversation with someone.
Cloud walked up to her. Then, for no apparent reason, he turned his back on her.
A voice echoed in his mind.
“Cloud. Kill her!”
“What?!” He silently protested.
“Our master does not want her interfering.”
“Our master?”
“Yes… our leader, who will rule this planet!”
“Yes,” said Cloud blankly,” she will rule over us, and you will be invincible!”
“Well done!” the voice exulted,” now, go! Kill her! Kill the traitor!”
“Yes… the traitor must die.”
Cloud turned to look at Aeris. She was still praying. He slowly drew his sword from his back with a steely slithering sound. He looked down on her, and prepared himself. He raised his sword, and in his head he heard a funeral knoll ringing. He shifted the weight of his sword from hand-to-hand, trying to decide where to strike.
He then looked again at her. Traitor. She deserves to die.
His brow creased, and he lifted his awesome blade over the top of his head. He looked up at his sword.
“All you have to do is bring that sword down,” said the voice in his head,” and you would have saved the planet.”
“You sure?”
“Yes,” the voice said.
“How will it save the world?”
“Doesn’t matter. If you do this, you’ll be a world hero.”
“You’re right,” said Cloud blankly,” we must remove this evil from our midst.”
“Do it!”
Cloud looked once more at Aeris. His eyes flashed, and he shifted his grip. He tensed his hardened muscles, and pulled his sword forwards. It came down.
“Cloud, STOP!” Tifa shouted as loud as she could.
Cloud’s sword suddenly stopped in mid-air, mere centimetres from Aeris’s head! Cloud’s face suddenly filled with horror, and he shook his head, as if waking up from a nightmare. He started backwards in fear.
Aeris then looked up. As always, she was beautiful. Her green eyes glowed that glossy green. As she looked up at him, a small smile came upon her perfect lips. Cloud was amazed. This frail girl, without any help, had tried to save the Planet. Cloud looked at her, and he realised that he loved her. That is why he saved her. Not because she was a “damsel in distress”. He knew all he had done for her was through love.
She smiled knowingly, and said in his mind,” I was wondering how long that would take to get trough your thick skull. Come. Come with me, I will care for you.”
“You knew?” Cloud spoke silently in astonishment.
“Yes, of course,” said Aeris.
“Let’s go home, Aeris.”
“Of course.”
Cloud turned to go.
“Cloud!” she said.
Cloud turned, now smiling.
“Yes?” he inquired.
“There are so many things I have to tell you,” she whispered,” So many things about us.”
“I know.” said Cloud,” let’s work it out when we get home.”
“But… When will we get ho…”
But she would never complete her sentence. Her low whisper was cut off by a large sound. The sound of bones crushing. Cloud looked at her, and saw the long, slender blade that protruded from her breast.
Cloud then saw him. The same black coat. The same adamantine shoulder armour. The same glowing eyes. Those eyes were filled with hate, and a lust for power and destruction.
It was Sephiroth. And he had just killed Aeris.
“Sephiroth! NO!” shouted Cloud, running to catch Aeris’ limp form. Tears were running down his cheeks, and his expression was hopeless…
Aeris looked at him, and smiled softly. She slowly raised her hand and ran it down Cloud’s cheek.
“Cloud…” she said haltingly in a voice near to tears,” I love you”
“Aeris!” said Cloud in a sobbing voice,” please don’t tell me you’re going to die!”
“Cloud, I …” and she spoke no more. Her head sagged limply forward, and a bright aquamarine coloured orb fell from her hair, and bounced off the stepping-stones, and sank into the lake.
Cloud wept. He couldn’t hold back the tears. Sephiroth stood behind him, with his arms extended in the air as if in praise of the heavens.
Sephiroth looked slowly down at Cloud.
“What are you doing?” he said in a quizzical voice.
“You-you… killed her!” said Cloud in a despairing voice.
“You have feelings? Stop pretending to!” started Sephiroth in a commanding voice.
“Shut up!” Cloud shouted,” don’t you realise? Aeris is dead! She will never smile, never cry, never get angry or feel happy! You killed her! You murdered Aeris!”
“That’s funny,” mused Sephiroth,” you shouldn’t feel, as you are…”
Cloud grabbed his sword and launched himself at Sephiroth, with anger and pure rage in his eyes.
Sephiroth leapt in the air and dodged his hasty strike. He flew upwards, and said,” Because you are a puppet.”
“A puppet?” said Cloud.
Sephiroth flew upwards, higher and higher, and was gone, leaving nothing but the very echoes of his mocking laughter…
Sorry, I had to use my party for this story. |
