Cajun Sunrise
Hybrid tea rose: noun:
Any of a class of cultivated hybrid roses originally developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, noted especially for their long-stemmed flowers in a wide range of strong colors and for their extended blooming season. Also called hybrid tea rose.*
Cajun Sunrise. One of these hybrid tea roses. The petals are velvet... soft.. yellow, tinged with pink around the edges. The pink crinkles around the yellow petals, like fire eating away at a yellowed newspaper.
In the so called language of flowers, a rose with yellow petals and red tips symbolizes a gesture of falling in love.
Artemis Fowl the Second figured pink tips were close enough.
A pair of garden shears in one hand, he was using his other hand to gently brush the petals of the roses as he glanced about the garden. "Mother will be angry if I cut one of you," he said to the roses. Drops of dew slid down their petals without a sun, catching the rising sun (rose colored itself, with all it's pink and orange and red) and shimmering like jewels.
The roses were fairly large, four inch blooms. They looked heavy. Almost weary.
Artemis looked over his shoulder once before snipping one from the back of the garden, being careful to cover any evidence by cutting as far down on the green, waxy stem as he could. He pulled the rose out carefully, being sure not to hurt himself on the angry thorns, reaching for the vase sitting at the ground next to him. Filled halfway with water, the crystal vase awaited it's new inhabitant.
The vase felt just as fragile as the rose in Artemis slender, pale hands. The rose made a soft "plink", dropping into the water and the stem resting against the bottom of the vase.
He walked out of the green house into the December cold. Mother had decided she wanted a greenhouse. She wanted flowers all year round. Artemis was glad for it. He carried the vase carefully to the car waiting on the front drive. Butler was awake surely, but not even his knowledge as a body guard would help him noticed that the Artemis in the bed on his screens was just a clever computer program.
Mister Foaly had provided him with many ideas for sneaking out.
Hopefully, by the time Butler noticed the Bently was missing or even heard the tires spin out on the gravel, Artemis would be too far gone to be able to catch.
And it wasn't as if Artemis was doing anything bad, after all.
Merely leaving a gift for a dear friend.
A very dear friend, thought Artemis, placing the vase carefully in between his knees, sitting in the driver's seat of the car. He buckled his seat belt, checked his mirrors, did everything Butler and his father had taught him to do while teaching him to drive. His driver's lisence was tucked into his coat pocket.
Legal. Totally legal.
Push the brake, driving gear. Slowly, he rolled through forward through the circular drive away, the gravel under the tires absolutely deafining.
But he was 18 now, right? He should be allowed to go and come as he pleased?
That's what he kept telling himself.
Faster, faster. The cherry trees lining the drive looked skeletal and dreary against the gray sky, already heavy with snow.
He looked in his rear view mirror and saw the faint form of Butler standing on the wide front steps, waving.
Artemis wasn't sure if that was an attention getting "come back here now" wave, or a good bye wave, but either way he HAD to do this.
It was their anniversery after all. Tomorrow was Christmas day. |
