ok i have these poems from my senior english class... we were given them and told to write what we think and interprate them.

ok heres the first one

My Papa's Waltz

The whiskey on your breath
Could make a small boy dizzy;
But I hung on like death:
Such waltzing was not easy.

We romped until the pans
Slid from the kitchen shelf;
My mother's countenance
Could not unfrown itself.

The hand that held my wrist
Was battered on one knuckle;
At every step you missed
My right ear scraped a buckle.
You beat time on my head
With a palm caked hard by dirt,
Then waltzed me off to bed
Still clinging to your shirt.

i think it is either about a abusive dad who beats his son after getting drunk from a hard day at work.
or is it about a dad who likes to have fun and dance with his son. i know its says

The whiskey on your breath
Could make a small boy dizzy;

and that seemes like hes drunk but nowhere in the poem does it imply that he is

there are also some confusing parts to this

The hand that held my wrist
Was battered on one knuckle;
At every step you missed
My right ear scraped a buckle.
You beat time on my head

ne clues on what this means

these were the most confusing lines for me

also another poem that is even more confusing for me is

discourse on the logic of language

i couldnt find it newhere on the internet so i cant post it but if neone has read it or can find it please post it here

Did you think maybe the waltz the author was speaking of was the beating the son was receiving?

leaving for the summer. Will try and pop in everyonce in a while. It will only get worse once school starts, so go ahead and wrap your head around me not being here. Please don't PM while I'm gone. I hope I can clean the slate with you all before I leave. Um... I guess that's it. Have a happy and safe summer and God loves you!

Both interpretations are accurate enough. That's the best thing about poetry, it's open for interpretation and discussion.

That bit you had trouble with may mean the dad sometimes dropped the kid and as he hit the floor he scraped the buckle of the dad's shoe or something. The time beating on his head is just the father being abusive again.

Thats what i see it as anyway hope it helps.

1st, this part:

The whiskey on your breath
Could make a small boy dizzy;
But I hung on like death:
Such waltzing was not easy.

the waltzing was not easy, that's because the man was drunk from whiskey. the boy had to hang on like crazy in order not to fall off or get hurt.

ok this part:

The hand that held my wrist
Was battered on one knuckle; <--[damaged by heavy blows.]
At every step you missed <--[whenever the father misses a step while dancing .. (continued below)]
My right ear scraped a buckle. <--[the boy must be little and pretty young, so that means he's much shorter than his dad. the dad must be wearing a belt with a buckle, so while dancing and making a mistep, there'd be some violent jolting or tripping and might cause the boy's ear to scrape against the belt buckle.]
You beat time on my head <--[with the words "beat time on my head", he may be beating his son's head constantly. or in the possible case of waltzing, they dance for a long time. but i'd suggest the first one.]
