1st, this part:
The whiskey on your breath
Could make a small boy dizzy;
But I hung on like death:
Such waltzing was not easy.
the waltzing was not easy, that's because the man was drunk from whiskey. the boy had to hang on like crazy in order not to fall off or get hurt.
ok this part:
The hand that held my wrist
Was battered on one knuckle; <--[damaged by heavy blows.]
At every step you missed <--[whenever the father misses a step while dancing .. (continued below)]
My right ear scraped a buckle. <--[the boy must be little and pretty young, so that means he's much shorter than his dad. the dad must be wearing a belt with a buckle, so while dancing and making a mistep, there'd be some violent jolting or tripping and might cause the boy's ear to scrape against the belt buckle.]
You beat time on my head <--[with the words "beat time on my head", he may be beating his son's head constantly. or in the possible case of waltzing, they dance for a long time. but i'd suggest the first one.] |
