This story features on both FFD and FFR, so that everyone can enjoy no matter which forum you use.

Now I don't know about you, but I was seriously dissappointed with the matrix sequels. So I've decided to write a fan fic based on what I thought should have happened instead. I'm ignoring virtually all of the sequels ideas, save a few cool ones and just cutting loose on my own tale.

Its set exactly after 'The Matrix' and starts with Neo's last phone call to the Machines.

So perhaps finally I'll make up my own answer to the question: What is the Matrix?

The Matrix Reloaded

Revised

1.

Pitch black.

Only a small green bar blinked rhythmically on and off. Nothing happened for several moments, then a sound could be heard – the abrupt beginning of a telephone connection. The blackness came alive with bright green letters informing that a ‘trace program’ had begun. Number began to appear of the screen as the caller’s number was pinpointed.

“I know you're out there.” A husky male voice said, exuding complete calm, “ I can feel you now.”

The numbers stopped appearing. Something went wrong. The trace stopped and an error message flashed upon the prompt. The speaker continued talk in his imperturbable nature, each sentence teeming with determination and passion.

“I know that you're afraid. You're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone and then I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world without you, a world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries, a world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you…”

The line clicked as the speaker hung up.

Neo slid open the door of the telephone box and stepped out onto a busy city street. He looked casually left, then right watching the ordinary people going about their days. He pitied them because they were oblivious to the truth. None of them knew anything about them the matrix or about the machines, that controlled them. He wondered if they would be able to handle it if they did know. After all, even he had had trouble accepting it the day he swallowed that red pill. Part of him didn’t want to believe even now, but he guessed that would subside in time, particularly now that he could see it with his own eyes. The strange, green strands of code that created the matrix were visible to him, he could see how they worked. He could reach in and alter them with his mind, bending this false world to his own desire.

Taking a step forward, he joined the moving traffic of people. He placed a pair of dark sunglasses over his eyes and walked calmly amongst them, letting the steady stream carry him away. Somehow he would save these people; he knew that now just as Morpheus had known. For he was the One. He knew there would be challenges ahead and choices to make, but that would not stop him.

Neo heard a phone start ringing. It was miles away, but his heightened senses could detect the hacked program calling out to him. It was time to go - to go back to the real world. A smile creased his face. Perhaps he should show these people something right now. He halted in the crowd and people had to dodge in order to avoid hitting him. Some shouted obscenities, but were shocked to silence when he suddenly flew off into the air, completely defying the laws of gravity. Everyone on the street was stunned and could only stare at him as he sailed away; their mouths hanging open.

In a side alley a man had been emptying his trash when the incident occurred.

“Holy shi-” he began, but something caught in his throat and he could only manage an elongated gargle.

Something seemed to tear through him, like it had been trapped inside, waiting to get out. The garbage can he had once been holding clattered noisily to the ground. His body contorted and shifted, until it was completely replaced by a new man, dressing in an official looking suit and wearing dark glasses. A white piece was set in his ear, providing a link to his masters. This was an Agent of the system - a guardian of the matrix.

The agent looked into the sky, but Neo was already gone. He levelled his gaze at the street and spoke monotonously into thin air.

“This is only the beginning.” He said, turning to walk down the alley, “Mr. Anderson.”

Neo woke abruptly as he jacked out of the matrix and jumped back into the real world. A sharp pain coursed through his skull as the needle was pulled out. He was never going to get used to that. It hurt like a real son of a ***** and was probably the worst thing about jacking in. He still possessed vivid recollection of the first time he had ever been unplugged, by a machine in the real world matrix. It had almost killed him. That and the fact he couldn’t swim, which proved disastrous when the machines flushed him down the drain like a useless piece of crap. Not being able to swim hadn’t been his fault after all; he had spent the whole of his life immobile in a cubicle.

“Are you all right Neo?” A familiar voice asked, its tone deep, but soft in nature.
“I’m fine Morpheus.” Neo replied, getting up from the rusty chair in which he had laid.

Neo surveyed the dark room, which was a hulking mass of metal and a swamp of bizarre electronic equipment. Vines of coaxial hang and snaked to and from huge monolithic battery slabs, a black portable satellite dish and banks of systems and computer monitors. It was dark, cramped and cold. Stray sparking wires hung down all over the place and there were holes in the ceiling from where machine sentinels had recently cut into the hull. He had to admit that the Nebuchadnezzar had seen better days even in the short time he had been on board. Even so, it was home for now.

Morpheus walked over to the operator station, which had three screens showing the green code of the Matrix. Sat at the station was Tank, his side bandaged heavily to protect an open wound. Neo owned the young man his life for stopping the traitor Cypher from carrying out his plan to return to the matrix. It was a shame about his brother Dozer and the others who had died for his betrayal, but as Morpheus had told him recently ‘their sacrifice would not be in vain’. Neo wondered if that was any conciliation for Tank.

“I need you in the ****pit Tank. We’re leaving broadcast depth.” Morpheus said, putting a hand on Tank’s shoulder.
“Yes sir. Are we going home?”

“To Zion?” Neo asked. He knew very little about the last human city save what Morpheus had told him.

Tank took off his headset and limped off toward the ****pit. Neo smiled at him comfortingly and he managed a small one back. Morpheus talked quietly to Neo.

“Yes. We are returning to Zion. The others deserve a proper funeral and the ship needs to be repaired.”

Neo looked at his feet.

“What is Zion like? I haven’t heard much, except it’s near the centre of the earth.”
“You will find out soon Neo.”

Morpheus turned away and walked off, hands folded behind his back. Neo frowned. He was always in the dark it seemed, even now. The mysteries of the Matrix were beginning to unravel, but the real world have is own complications.

“Neo. I must ask that you tell no one in Zion that you are the One.” Morpheus uttered, stopping on the stairs.
“Why?” Neo demanded.
“Because there are those that do not believe as I do. And there are those who would use you Neo. Mankind is united in its struggle against the machines, but that doesn’t mean that everyone agrees.”

Neo considered this for a moment. He had never thought about whom Morpheus really was, the captain of a single ship. Neo realised that there were others out there doing exactly the same job, freeing minds from the matrix, but they probably were not searching for the One.

“Okay.” Neo replied finally, then added, “Where is Trinity?”

Morpheus leant on the metal railing of the staircase. “Still saying her goodbyes. Maybe you should join her.”

Neo felt uneasy. He hadn’t known the others for very long at all and didn’t believe that he had any right to bid them farewell like an old friend. Then again, they had all played their part in saving him from the matrix. Plus he really needed to see Trinity. They had hardly spoken since they had kissed over a day ago. Perhaps the whole thing had been stress induced, but he hoped it wasn’t. He had been attracted to her since he had first set eyes on her, but with all that had happened…He couldn’t explain his feelings.

“Thanks.” Neo said and Morpheus nodded.
“I’ll call you when we near Zion.”

Morpheus left Neo alone and headed for the ****pit. Neo headed down the stairs after him, then turned to the rear of the hovership. He readied himself to talk with Trinity.
