'XXXVI'
PROLOGUE
XXXV
How had it come to this?
Squall knelt alone upon the blackened earth of an naked mountainside, his clothes in tatters and his hands smeared with blood. A fierce breeze hurled itself against him causing his unruly hair and torn jacket to flail unrestrained. Tears that streamed down his cheeks were caught by the wind and carried away, unbound by the grief of their creator’s heart.
Smoke rose someway off in the distance, beyond ominous clouds of grey and jagged mountain peaks. Squall could not bring himself to look at the rising plume of darkness, for he knew its cause. Balamb Garden, his home, lay in ruins. Its once proud halls shattered upon a field of death, which was drenched by the blood of its students.
Echoes of battle still rung in Squall's ears and he could not block them out. He would not close his eyes, for fear of seeing dead faces dance in his mind. A harsh gust of freezing wind slapped him across the face, but he felt nothing. Reality had faded away, to be replaced only by despair and sadness.
How had it come to this?
A dishonoured gunblade lay at Squall’s feet, but it was not his own. He looked down upon its tarnished metal surface and caught his reflection. A tired, pale warrior stared back at him with a tormented, sullen eyes that were inflamed from crying.
He reached down, pain suddenly coursing through his body and tried to reach the rejected sword. Taking hold of its leather handle, he hefted the weapon up and onto his shoulder. The feel of the blades weight gave him new strength and his grief subsided. It was replaced by a new emotion: anger.
Squall rose uneasily, steadying himself against the craggy rocks and was surprised that he could stand. Walking would prove more difficult and fighting would be an immeasurable task. Yet, he would need to do both if he intended on accomplishing his revenge.
Managing to get himself into motion, Squall began to descend the mountain, following a narrow path that had been weather into the stone by the hands of time. Small rocks slid beneath his heavy feet and almost caused him to tumble several times, but that did not deter him.
With every step, his resolve grew stronger and he seemed to find new energy reserves. Whatever grace the gods had given him, would now be spent on this final act. Squall knew the task would be the death of him, but that did not deter him.
There was nothing left now, everyone he had ever loved was dead: except one
A flash of lightning arched across the heavens accompanied by a roll of thunder.
But soon they would die. He would pierce their heart and be destroyed, but he would have his revenge. They would die.
Zell would die.
