After being unable to write for more than five months, here is a new fic I've started. I don't have a title for this yet. This is the first of a new series. And I have added hyperlinks so you will have an idea of what I'm referring to.
I also have a link to this as well.

I was standing all alone in the void, my body mapped with scars and abrasions I earned in my lifetime. My eyes were growing weary of seeing the darkness. Not a ray of light was visible. I continued to shiver and my heart was beating faster than normal. I felt that the blood that stained my garb had not yet dried, for my wounds had not healed completely. My strength was being eaten up slowly as my shoulder continued to strain itself from the rifle I am carrying. My legs could hardly move, and I am slowly losing my consciousness. I dropped my rifle to the ground, and fell to the ground knees first. I had not breathed in fresh air, and my head lacked oxygen. I felt like going to bed for a long time. Then suddenly, I hear a familiar sound.
It was a gunshot. A shot that rang a bell. I turned everywhere, trying to locate the source of the salvo. Until I heard another. And I turned around one more time to the left, and out of the shadowy darkness, a corpse was lying dead, blood spilling from the brain. The bullet pierced through her skull, and the wound was beyond conventional treatment. It was a fatal shot.
As I carefully approached the body, I looked for anything worth finding out about this helpless victim of genocide. I searched the body for any identification, leaving no stone unturned. Finally, I saw a dogtag strapped on the neck. I removed the tag from her neck, and began to examine it. Soon, I learned that this person was somebody I knew from the past. As I further examined it closer, I saw the following letterings on the tag:
SO Codename: Chibi-Devil
Enlistment: Jun 2001
Serial Number: 1683
I was in complete silence. Fear was just beside me. I did not even know what to say about this. My adoptive sister was not just killed; she was dishonored greatly. But by who? That I do not know, but should find out. As I turned my eyes away from her lifeless body, I saw not one, but more of them - lined up dead next to her. So I examined each body carefully, and to my shock, I found these in each of the tags.
SO Codename: Disia
Enlistment: Jan 2001
Serial Number: 414
SO Codename: Rylkan
Enlistment: May 2001
Serial Number: 1234
SO Codename: Jha'Meia
Enlistment: May 2001
Serial Number: 1376
SO Codename: The Dark Prince
Enlistment: Nov 2001
Serial Number: 3048
SO Codename: _________

By the gods! They're...
Yes. My family and friends from ShinraOnline. All dead, brutally massacred. I could not believe I am seeing this horror right in front of me. I was thinking of closing my eyes and believing that I never saw them, but as I would, they would just haunt me more. I started to show my sadness. I just couldn't accept this. Tears were slowly flowing from my eyes. Slowly, my grief turned into wrath. This merciless act, I would never forget! Whoever did this should pay with his life.
I felt a new boost of strength infused in me, as I hurried back to pick up my rifle which I dropped. I released the lock that let go of the empty magazine and inserted a new one, my last. I made a bit of cleaning and tweaking on my weapon, until I was ready. I walked back to the place where I found the corpses of my friends. Seeing that I could not see anything but the darkness around me, I rested my finger on the trigger and fire anytime. But that did not matter to me as I took up my rifle and fired indiscriminately, whether I would be lucky I might hit a target or not. I was screaming just as the barrel of my rifle was set on auto-fire. I was totally out of control, and my finger was still on the trigger, until I finally ran out of bullets.
Nothing was coming out of my weapon except the smoke that resulted from the released salvos. Did I hit anything? I was wondering if I did. After all, I fired my weapon in all directions. I paused for a while and breathed deeply for once, thinking it was over. But suddenly, I heard a gunshot - it was the same thing I heard a moment ago. But it just did not fire at random. I felt a very serious pain in my right leg. It was bleeding greatly. The bullet was aimed at me. No wonder. I let go of my rifle and attended to the newly inflicted wound. I gripped my two hands to stop the bleeding, but the blood only soaked my garment and stained my already weary hands. I was unable to stand as I dropped on the surface. I could not bear the pain. It was hurting just as my strength. I grumbled and gasped, and my teeth were seething against each other as I tried to fight it. I was held totally defenseless and immobile. I was desperate in finding a solution, but more problems came in its place. I crawled near the bodies to find relief, but as I did, I saw a shadowy figure coming in my direction. I could not see who it was, but I was sure of one thing - he was the one who killed my kin and friends. He was walking slowly like the shadow following its master. I wanted to get away from it but I felt that it was getting nearer than usual. And as I saw the silhouette, it stopped. I then noticed its right arm reaching for something. It drew out its imaginary pistol, but as it came closer, it was no illusion. It was for real. He pointed his gun right at me. I knew I was going to die that time. I tried to find out who it was, and I was in shock. I just could not believe what I was seeing. As the figure came out of the shadows, I was totally helpless...
it looked just a lot like...those eyeglasses...
No, it was not me. Yes, he looked very much like me. But that was impossible. I am the only AVF281 alive. Or was there another?
His feet carried him closer, and as I watched helplessly, I quickly reached for my pistol resting on its holster. But the shivers and chills of my arms were preventing me from fighting back. I needed to act quickly, otherwise I am good as dead. Only when he was two to three paces near I was able to draw out my .45 caliber. Alas, I was too late. Before I could pull the trigger on my gun, his leg came kicking towards me, but it hit my hand. I lost grip of my weapon, and he took hold of my head, thrusting his pistol point-blank at my skull. I refused to see myself being shot, so I closed my eyes. Then, I heard a sound. The bullet went through.
--
I quickly got up, gasping and breathing faster than usual. I noticed that the pillow and bedsheet was soaked because I was sweating. I thought I was dead. I hope my sight was not deceiving me, but I saw my quarters. In front of me was my reading table, some books, writing material, an old fluorescent lamp which I have not taken for servicing, and loose change. The window, located just beside the desk, still had its curtains closed. On my right was the banner of my guild hanging on the wall. It was the flag of the Kilika 9. Inscribed on it were the names of my comrades: Rei/Mederu, Jonny/Naraku, Leon/Kazuki, Julia/Leillia, Nic/GamerGirl, Simon/Lennon Legend, Damien/Crowley, James/Khaeos Drao-Kin, Philip/Ryuujin, and Aldrin/AVF281...and the last mentioned name was me. Below the banner was my standard issue Armalite rifle, Kevlar Armor K-12, a combat dagger, compass, grenades, and bullets. And on my left was the door. Now I remembered. I was in my private room all along, I was not mistaken. So that meant that I was just having a nightmare in my sleep. Then again, I almost believed it to be real. I was feeling drowsy, but I refused to lay back. Suddenly, I heard a knock on the door, and someone was calling my attention.
"AVF, open up! Open the door, mate!"
"I am coming. Hold on for a sec," I replied back.
I decided to get up, picked up my glasses, which was resting by the lampshade beside the bed, wore my sandals, and opened the curtain. The sun has not yet risen. The time was 6:10 in the morning. I walked towards the door, turned the doorknob, and it was Simon, also known as Lennon Legend. Now this man was a big fan of John Lennon, and my dad liked the famed Beatles artist too. I remember when I said about going to Britain, but then he replied, "THERE IS NO ****ING COUNTRY CALLED BRITAIN FOR ****'S SAKE!" I was a bit surprised, but I guess he was right too. When referring to country, there was England, Scotland, or Ireland. He was enlisted as a regular member of the FFR Armed Forces in November 2002, and was made a mercenary of Kilika 9 in May 2003.
He shook my hand and greeted me as always. "How was your sleep, mate? Did you rest well?"
I was thinking of being honest, but I did not want to tell him the truth.
"I'm just fine. Nothing happened. If I slept badly, I would have fallen off my bed and injured myself."
He was slightly amused because I was joking. "Well, just hope you did not let the bugs bite," he replied with a slight cackle. He later became serious afterwards.
"Anyway, I came here because you need to report to the leaders right away. Admiral Naraku requests your immediate presence," he said directly and without delay.
I was wondering why our leader wanted me to see him. I hope this had nothing to do with last night. I just don't know why, but I have yet to find out for myself. I need to know more why I was being summoned.
"Lennon, did Jonny give out any specific reasons?"
"Sorry, I really cannot say. All I know is that you must urgently meet with him. And not only Jonny, but Leon and Rei are expecting you," he elaborated further.
Great. Mederu and Kazuki were also calling me as well.
Jonny, codenamed Naraku, was one of the pioneer members of Kilika 9. He was a reputable force in the FFR military, enlisted in April 2002. An excellent naval commander, he served as the captain of the warship EternityBloom. He was later promoted to Admiral. However, a misunderstanding among his colleagues resulted in his banning from KI9. As a result he sought enlistment with KI9's offshoot clan, Spira 6. He was later reinstated after making amends with the leaders. His brilliant strategies and plans were praised highly, and this resulted in his promotion as a co-leader of KI9.
Rei, or Mederu, was likewise a part of the early KI9. She came in March 2002, a few weeks before I registered. When the clan was created for the purposes of initiating training exercises, she proved to be an asset. She was later promoted as a leader for her efforts. Following the resignation of her co-leaders Attrox and Aerosol, she remained to be the only active leader, until she brought Jonny to assist her.
Leon, screenname Kazuki, became an official KI9 member after he relinquished command of SP6 to Ethereal, my former commanding officer. Due to the fact that KI9 was filled to the brim with the best members, he and Klasko, who was also on the waiting list of KI9, created the SP6 to rival the earliest veteran clan on FFR. They molded SP6 to be a rival clan along with KI9. However, with the departure of Naraku and another member Quishane from SP6, Kazuki resigned as a leader of that clan and formally enlisted with the KI9.
I was a former member of SP6, but due to the leaving of its key members, I decided to take my leave of that clan as well. Coincidentally, I was not the only former SP6'er to join KI9. Kevin, or Siniquity, was also a member of SP6 before he left. I joined KI9 in February 2003, and Siniquity followed a few days later. However, he was removed due to his inactivity a few months later and Nic, or GamerGirl, was reinstated.
Enough of this. I stopped going deeper into my subconscious mind, and went back to the real world.
"Just tell them I will be right there in about 30 to 45 minutes. I need to clean myself first," I told Lennon Legend.
"OK. I'll inform them," he promptly replied as he left the vicinity of my room, on his way to the hall, and towards the KI9 Headquarters.
I closed the door to my room and made way to the bathroom. I got hold of my towel and entered the shower room. I started to undress myself, turned on the knob on the shower clockwise, and let the slightly warm water penetrate my body. I felt that pulsating heat warming me up, and even waking me. It was to prevent me from blinking my eyes. For ten to fifteen minutes, I remained wet all over my body, until I've decided to end my shower. I wrapped my body with the towel, and left the bathroom, being careful not to slip like what happened to me the last time. I faced the mirror on the bathroom, as I applied shaving cream on my chin and face so I could shave off any excess hairs growing. I dried myself up, put on fresh clothing, wiped the lenses of my glasses to keep it clean, and readied my military garb thoroughly ironed out. It was the traditional KI9 standard uniform, camouflaged khaki. On the top left of the garment was a sewn nametag with the letterings FFR Armed Forces. On the right was another nametag, this time with the info as follows:
AVF281____Mar 2002
Commander____Kilika 9
As I stared at it, I had been reflecting how far I have come. From becoming a member of Spira 6 to a member of Kilika 9. It brought me memories as I looked at it. I put on my military garb, and wore my combat boots. I thought to myself just like what it was when I was still a mercenary of KI9. As if I am being cued that my time was already up, I heard a knock on the door. It was Lennon Legend, I presume. He called my attention to wrap things up.
"Come on, you'll be late!"
"I'll be on my way," I told him behind the door.
My thinking too much resulted in my 45 minutes of preparation being consumed without my noticing it. I made some last minute changes, making sure I did not forget anything. Afterwards, I rushed to the door and opened it. Waiting for me was him alright, who was also in his military attire.
"What took you so long? Is everything all right?"
"Yes. I only woke up late," I told him the same excuse earlier. I was just making sure he doesn't worry.
"Well, shall we get going then?" He asked me as I rushed towards the KI9 Headquarters, but not before I locked the door to my room. |

Hehehe. I like the idea of it, actually. It's kinda...well, boring in parts.
I'll list a few examples:
Quote:
|
I felt a new boost of strength injected in me, as I hurried back to pick up my rifle which I dropped.
|
The "injected" just doesn't work very well with that sentence. Gives me really odd mental pictures.
Quote:
|
I was screaming loudly just as the barrel of my rifle was set on auto-fire.
|
If you're screaming, of course it's going to be loudly. Redundant, that is.
Quote:
|
"Come on, you'll be late!" He called my attention to hurry up.
|
It just...your wording slows it down. I think you could've worded it a lot better.
Also, so nice to know KI9 has forgotten me already. ;p |
|
|
|
|
|
|
KI9 hasn't forgotten you, but I based it on the current roster, not including those on the waiting list.
Once I start writing the next chapters, you might be included. I can't promise it though, but I'll try. |

As promised Nic, you now have a role here. Since Kevin has been booted, you've taken his place.
Quistis: No problem, this is indeed the right place. Thanks.
This is not yet finished though; I have yet to add to this. I've been writing this on Notepad, since the PC I'm using doesn't have MSWord. Please bear with me.
In the meantime, I'm open to any critique/comment on this so I can improve on it.
-=====-=====-=====-=====-=====-=====-=====-=====-
It was 7:00 in the morning, and the conference room of the KI9 Headquarters was still illuminated by the fluorescents on the ceiling. In the middle of the room was a three-dimensional model map, patterned after a specific location on the real world. On one side of the wall, there were three private quarters for each of the leaders. Each room served as a personal office for one of them.
On the wall facing the offices was a huge oil canvas of a great battle. That was the Battle at the TZ-FFR Border, in which the grand armies of Tekken Zaibatsu and Final Fantasy Republic fought over supremacy of the land and the resources therein. The hero of that battle was the late General Rainecloud, the FFR Armed Forces Intelligence Officer. He was the brains behind the defeat of the Grand Zaibatsu Army led by the infamous General EcofighterJunKazama.
General Rainecloud had a passion for striving his men to victory. He would always encourage them to fight, not to die in vain, but to protect the ideals of freedom that they firmly believed. Now resting in peace, his legacy is being kept alive by one of his former subordinates, then Lieutenant Colonel, now General Mederu, one of the KI9 co-leaders.
Inside the room, the three officers were in a serious mood. They were viewing the model of a land and sea mass, with a scale of 1:12500. There were miniature vehicles of all types - tanks, jeeps, trucks, cruisers, destroyers, and missile boats - that could be seen on the scaled model. There were also legends that were specifically marked - troop concentrations, mine fields, artillery deployment areas, radar sites, airfields, surface-to-air missiles, training areas, special fortifications, and other important marks. They were assessing the current status of FFR's external and internal defenses, as well as marking the strong and weak points in them.
After making an observation on the map, Admiral Naraku was the first to break the silence of the room.
"Based on my assessment of FFR's defenses, I suggest the additional deployment of anti-aircraft batteries to the south. Our naval forces alone cannot prevent incursions by hostile fighters. With the major aircraft carriers EternityBloom and Mistefanyare in dry dock, air support is limited to a minimum. Our fighter squadrons are spread out thinly due to patrolling FFR's airspace."
In response, his colleague Commodore Kazuki said, "Must I suggest that in place of the anti-aircraft missiles, why not equip an advanced radar defense system for our naval forces? It will help in detecting enemy fighters from a distance of 300 miles. With sophisticated early warning systems, as well as improving the range of our surface-to-air missiles, we can maximize the efficiency of our military at no additional expense."
As a former Navy pilot himself, Admiral Naraku was not only adept in sea battles, but also in air combat and maneuvering. Before his commissionship to the EternityBloom as its captain, he was an ace among his fellow pilots. He outmaneuvered enemy planes and shot down 78 of them. He was not only an airborne threat, but also to enemy forces at sea. In fact, he was credited for sinking 15 gunboats and 6 frigates from his F/A-18 fighter alone. He would fly very low to avoid radar detection before firing his missiles with precision. Like the generals of the past, he emphasized the importance of a strong defense perimeter, on the ground and air. Attack only comes at the other end of defense.
Commodore Kazuki was very much the opposite compared to his superior officer, whom he considered his best friend. To him, a strong defense was not entirely flawless, for there would still be small cracks which the enemy could exploit and render it useless. Instead of facing the enemy head-on, his strategy would be to take advantage of the enemy's own weakness so it could be used against them. Foresight and knowledge were his deadliest weapons.
Despite their differing thoughts, their ideas would actually go hand-in-hand when it comes to an actual battle. Through foresight, Kazuki would map out the enemy's plan of attack and prompt Naraku to come up with his defensive strategy.
General Mederu, who was listening to the proposals of her fellow leaders, finally joined in the discussion.
"I would suggest that both defensive plans be implemented," she spoke. "It has to work on both ends. As much as possible, we need a defensive perimeter that is efficient as well as effective. If one is lacking, then it will be useless. Remember that the enemy will always find possible gaps in our defenses. If they do find it, they will concentrate on that point and eventually break through."
As General Rainecloud's right-hand officer, General Mederu never relied on only one defensive or offensive strategy. She always emphasized the indispensability of different strategies and their counter-strategies.
"General, with the Zaibatsu Armed Forces closing in on our positions, we are surrounded. What are our plans?
"Do not fret about it Colonel Mederu. I allowed them to close in so they would think they are winning. Once they make their push further, they have already exhausted their provisions and stretched their supply lines beyond the limit."
This strategy was very much the same thing that the legendary Sun Tzu emphasized - "Therefore those who win every battle are not really skillful - those who render others' armies helpless without fighting are the best of all."
As the Zaibatsu forces marched towards the capital of the Republic, Gen. Rainecloud did nothing but watch from afar. Col. Mederu was very reluctant as to her superior officer's move, but nevertheless, she agreed. The moment the Zaibatsu Army crossed the barren field leading to the gates of the Republic Headquarters, numerous artillery units appeared at Gen. Rainecloud's orders and fired at the incoming forces. In a few hours, the invaders were completely decimated and forced to turn back, which resulted in a crucial victory for the Republic.
Meanwhile, Commodore Kazuki and Admiral Naraku were surprised as to their colleague's decision.
"Rei, you can't be serious. Our military budget is not sufficient enough to cover the expenses."
"Jonny's right. The budget will suffice for only one - either the anti-aircraft battery upgrade, or the advanced radar system. We can't have both; it will be difficult to maintain them at the same time," Kazuki concurred to Naraku's reply.
General Mederu was not about to back down on her proposal, as she was willing to offer help in any way.
"I have transferred the surplus funds from the Air Force budget to these projects. I have consulted with General Ethereal about this matter, and he is willing to spare us some funds."
She already anticipated the need for a stronger anti-air defense, which was agreed upon by Spira 6 leader Ethereal, also the Air Force Commander-in-Chief.
"Rei, my air squadrons cannot watch over the skies 24/7. Our pilots need a rest too and we do not want to squander them for patrol missions alone. They need to train in combat maneuvering and dogfighting. I am willing to allocate some funds from the Air Force to your budget. We need a sophisticated radar system and anti-aircraft batteries. This will greatly lighten the load of my Air Force."
"I do not know how to thank you Liam. I promise you that I will raise this issue with my co-leaders and take action on this as soon as I can. I am very grateful for your help."
Admiral Naraku then went to ask, "Did he agree to your proposal?"
"I have no doubt about it. He recommended the allocation of the funds, and General Afterlab approved it," General Mederu nodded her head in affirmation.
"Well then, with the funding settled, we can start working on the project. How long will these projects take us?" Commodore Kazuki inquired afterwards.
"Approximately two to three weeks," General Mederu replied. "We will order our men to start working on the projects tomorrow, at 0700 HRS."
"I guess everything has been discussed at this conference," Admiral Naraku concluded. "Anyway, this meeting is adjourned. I'll wait here because I have to wait for AVF281. He will be arriving very soon along with Lennon Legend."
"Well in that case, we'll be waiting for him in our offices. Inform him to see me and Commodore Kazuki as well," General Mederu answered as she entered her room. Kazuki went to his quarters as well, knowing that Mederu sent the message.
-=====-=====-=====-=====-=====-=====-=====-=====-
Onboard a jeep, I was seated in front. Lennon Legend was driving the vehicle as he was to take me to the KI9 Headquarters. He was wearing his shades to prevent any distraction from the sun's rays. While on the way, he started a conversation.
"So, Aldrin, will you be joining the Advanced Training Course which will be held in three weeks time?"
"Yes. What about the others?"
"Those confirmed are myself, GamerGirl, Ryuujin, Leillia, Khaeos Drao-Kin, and the leaders."
"What about Damien?"
"I hate to say it, but he has requested for a transfer from Kilika 9. Probably, he might be joining the guilds which are not allied with the KI9," Simon said in an indifferent tone.
The guilds allied with the KI9 are the Red Dragon Syndicate, commanded by Navy Capt. Gadwinus; Valhalla, headed by Col. Citan; and Ragnarok, with Lt. Col. Kuja Sephiroth as its head. Crowley was a member of the RDS before he joined Kilika 9. I am anticipating that he may join the Triforce Alliance of Gen. Ethereal's Spira 6, VAdm. Temiko's Esthar 8, and BGen. Eternal Fire's Shinra Inc. Or maybe even Gen. Afterlab's Bastok Alliance.
I did not want to leave a spot empty for the clan. Yet, I know that Crowley had no intention of leaving. I just wanted to make sure that he doesn't. A week ago, I was talking to him about many things, particularly his future in the Kilika 9.
"You and Simon have proven yourselves to be great soldiers. I personally welcome you to the clan."
"I appreciate it, Aldrin. The leaders have already stamped our applications, and we are ready to do battle with our rivals. Simon and I are making a run towards becoming one of the elite soldiers of FFR."
"Your future with Kilika 9 is bright as the sun. Hell, we'll even be war heroes."
"HAHAHAHAHA!"
That was Crowley's memorable cackle. He was very excited about being a member of the Kilika 9. Simon said that he requested for a leave. Is the Crowley who made that laugh also the one who has requested a leave? Thus I started asking more questions.
"Is it confirmed though?"
"Rei says that he is no longer in the clan. But the official roster says otherwise," Simon explained.
I was really confused even more.
"There has got to be some conflicting remarks about that. I will assume that he has left. If he really is leaving, who do we have to take his place?"
"I have no idea who will replace him," sighed Lennon Legend.
"Personally, I'm considering Paradigm as a replacement. But if I can go back to Shinra Online, I'm inviting Jha'Meia to join us."
"So you're inviting your friend over? That would be interesting to see. But Paradigm would be just as promising."
"GamerGirl and Leillia are also in favor of making her a member of the guild. However, I have to discuss this with the leaders if they will approve of her."
"We're on our way to the base. You can speak to Admiral Naraku about it," Simon advised.
With that, I spoke no more and nodded. I bided my time as I was en route to the main base. All I could do now was watch the view and look forward. I watched in silence as I pulled out a cigar from my pocket and lit it. |
