I can see what you were going for... I'd say your caught in between somewhere on the "good scale" by the looks of it. You have some skill, just not the experience maybe?
Cool idea though. The main thing I noticed, is that the Spikey guy, should have some lighting and shanding on him, so his features (If any) show up more, and there should be some sunlight on his face. It looks weird, since the sun doesn't seem to be making any light on him. 
I like the water and sun lighting though.
