Hey, don't worry if it's basic.
Like I told you earlier, some of my best work (imho) is very simple. What I would recommend you doing, is try making some backrounds, and get more complex.

Not too bad..
What program are you using?
It's good enough.. but as you said, it's very basic.
I suggest fiddling around with filters and blending layers.. with Photoshop.
