Alrighty, vote for your preferred battle system while I go through a brief recap on the games from FFVI to FFIX (the only ones I have, being an UKian, so don't complain about there being no FFX - AND NO SPOILERS on my behalf please!). And tell us why you prefer whatever one it is.
FFVI: Espers, having to learn magic before you can use it, one Esper summon per person per battle. Extra abilities are equipped using relics, only two at a time.
FFVII: Materia, instant use of magic, materia levels up and clones over experience. Summons can be used more as experience increases. Extra abilities can be equipped with materia or accessories.
FFVIII: Guardian Forces. Assigning summons to characters that in turn allows characters to 'equip' stocked magic to weapons and armour. GF's have hitpoints and can be used an unlimited amount of times during battle.
FFIX: Eidolons, can only be used by Eiko or Garnet. Extra abilities use up stones, limited amount of stones. Magic is learned from weapons, can be used when not fully learned, but only if the weapon with the magic is equipped.
Have fun!

| I liked the FFVII materia because you dont have to equip the materia to certain people like you do in the other games. You jus buy the materia and equip to whoever you want. |

6? So why didn't you vote for it?
I'm gonna be an ass here and complain about its crappy system. Learning over experience without the ability to use tha magic until it is full learned? One Esper per character? One Esper summon per character per battle?! Ugh.... Up with GF's!

FF VIII.
You could center the power on 1 person, or balance the team.
It seamed to be the most versitile. |

FF8's Junction system was a good idea, but very poorly developed ultimately. You ended up with strong characters, but using magic in battles stood equal to weakening yourself. That's just flawed...
Materia was a very good, nice, easy and enjoyable way. But perhaps a bit _too_ easy. The Materia orb learned the spells, and you could pass a fully grown orb to someone else and HE (or she) would suddenly be the all-powerful wizard. Very enjoyable, but just too easy, really.
I voted for FFVI's Esper system. It makes the most sense, of all, to say the least. You equip an Esper, and while having it equipped, you learn the ways of the Esper and its accompanying spells. When you've learnt all from the Esper, you equip another to learn new spells. However, you retain your knowledge, which is bloody logical. After all, once you learn to spell your name and address, you don't "unlearn" it when someone takes the pen out of your hand, now do you?
Espers and learning magic the normal way, made the most sense and was the most well-balanced system of all. That is, I've not used Eidolons yet but I haven't heart anything revolutionary about them. Even so, I doubt they'll stand up to the perfectly balanced system of FFVI. |
