Who the hell came up with that name? I mean, the series ain't exactlky gettin' anywhere NEAR Final. I mean, its on X right now, and there's gonna be at least an XI and XII. I'm not complaining or anything, but shouldn't the first have been the last? Being final an' all? Wasn't there only one Final Fight (they got that right)? I reckon they should have changed the name when it really began to change - you know, like the first one was very simple, pick yer four characters and stick with 'em throughout the game, I don't know about 2 or 3, but 4 changed a lot from 1, maybe they should have changed the name at 4.
What would they have called it if they did change the name...?
Ah well, thats enough rambling for today.

Back in 198x somewhere, Square, a little gamedeveloper in Japan, was approaching bankruptcy. They needed a HIT game or else they'd go broke entirely. Then, Hironobu Sakaguchi came up with the idea of a RolePlaying Game. Since it was Square's last resort of staying in business, they called their mythical, fantasy-styled roleplaying game "Final Fantasy".
The game was a major major hit, and churned up heaps of cash for Square. And thus starteth the series. |

I s'pose thats a good excuse to call it Final Fantasy, but back in those days there were a few games going by the 'Final' trend - Final Fight, among others that I can't think of.

Yeah, Kura is right. When I was reading your first post in here, I was thinking up my reply, since I knew the answer but Kura picked it up.
Yep, since it was Square's last stand, and Sakaguchi might have gotten outta the business ATT, he named it "Final Fantasy". Makes sense, but yeah, it gets lame after about 4 "Final" titles.
They should re-name the series indeed.

The Final Fight etc. games were mostly from _after_ the first Final Fantasy, IIRC....
not sure on that, though... |

Yes, and we musn't forget the Joe Don Baker movie, Final Justice. Horrible. With some games it works. Final Fight was named so because it was to be Haggar's "Final" fight since he was a former street fighter. Even though there were 3 or more sequels so you couldn't really say it was actually his FINAL fight now could you? So Final Fantasy was born out of the brink of bankruptcy. Funny how that one game spawned the beginning of an RPG giant. |

It does sound slightly contradictory, doesn't it? This was Square's last bash at the big time before they sunk like most of the other software companies that had gone before them. It's nice to see them keeping the tradition alive, rather than changing the name of the game series. Maybe "Another Fantasy" would have been a more appropriate title. |

To be honest, I think it's called Final Fantasy because it is the FINAL fantasy..... for each world! You only see Clouds world once, and that's the final adventure for that world!!! They make a new world each time, so they keep it final. Like in FFVII, when Cloud finishes off Sephiroth, he goes through a mind loop, an then kicks the crap out of Sephy with omnislash!!! That means he finishes off the job FOR GOOD!!!! There is no FFVII continued! He made sure f that!!!
(Hope that made sense, 'cos it confused me!!!) |

Killak, no, that is not why the series is called Final Fantasy. I already gave the explanation, why are you bothering with this nonsense? *arches eyebrow*
And did you know that using multiple exclamation marks is the sign of a diseased mind? |
