Some apparent screenshots from the Home closed Beta...

A tipster who choses to remain anonymous sent us in these new screenshots of a new update to the Home closed beta. The beta is now at v0.8.6.

The new space is called the Media and Events Space and it seems to be a harness for all PLAYSTATION related events.

The update also came with a new survey asking questions such as your thoughts on the new space, it's presentation area, your opinion on the photos and video in the gallery, and what not. They want to know if you would like to see more events similar to PlayStation Day, what kind of content you want to see in the Media & Events Space to make your next visit more compelling, etc

Haha yeah...xD

More screenshots have cropped up here of the new media event room:

With Home delayed likely until the end of the year, it's at the very least comforting to know that they're still making improvements and not just making us wait. Following one of the latest updates to Home, SCEE has revealed some screenshots to display the new media room. We've included these shots below and the room seems to be within its own open-ended cavern.

Home still on schedule for the Fall:

Sony’s PlayStation Network director lays out the firm’s 2008 roadmap, telling Next-Gen that Home’s fall launch “won’t be a 0.5 release” and reiterating the company’s commitment to delivering a PS3 movie download service this summer.

“The Home open beta is still on schedule for release later this fall,” Eric Lempel told us in a recent interview.

Having been delayed on a number of occasions, the PSN boss was keen to assure gamers that Home would be worth the long wait by promising a rich and full-bodied experience come launch later this year.

Referring to comments made last month by fellow PSN director Susan Panico, in which she said that Home’s “rollout will be similar to Gmail" and that it will function as an "open, working beta", Lempel said that the online initiative, even in its initial public form, will not be some half-finished article but rather it will be representative of what the virtual world will ultimately offer.

“If you think about Gmail and Susan’s reference, Gmail when it launched in beta was a fully functional email service. I personally was using it and it offered everything you’d expect, but was in beta just to say that there’s more to come and maybe it’s not fully polished.

“The reason we’ve been delaying [Home] is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy. Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it won’t be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service.”

Lempel also touched briefly on Sony’s recently confirmed plans to launch a PS3 movie download service this summer, although he wouldn’t be drawn into commenting on launch dates or content details.

“I don’t have any more specifics right now, but like Kaz [Hirai] said, it will go live [in the US] this summer and I think it will offer consumers everything they’re looking for from us. It will offer everything they expect from us and probably a little bit more.”

Asked about a service launch date for Europe and Japan, Lempel said that he couldn’t “speak for the other regions at this time”.

He also declined to discuss the possibility of downloaded PS3 movies being transferable to PSP, reports that Sony has yet to secure any movie content deals with third parties, or whether the company is planning to offer TV and music content over the PlayStation Network alongside films.

Home will be region locked, according to a Sony representative. You can still visit anyone's private apartment, but public pavilions will be restricted depending on your geographic location.

Kaz hirai: "doesnt matter when we launch Home"

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) Kazuo Hirai has stated that he feels the launch date of PlayStation Home “doesn’t matter” if it means the company is able to provide the best service possible for consumers.

"I'd much rather make sure we take the time to have a great service rather than rush something into the market - only for consumers to say: "This is not enough for me." I want to avoid that," Hirai told MCV.

"If we have the right service, it doesn't matter when we launch - so long as it's in a reasonable timeframe."

The online social networking platform has already been delayed twice in the past; something which Hirai himself has apologised for, though ultimately believes the delay was necessary to deliver a quality product.

"Whether our competitors decide to follow what we've done with Home or not follow us, that's up to them. Given the fact that I've delayed the launch of Home twice - for which I've apologised - I think I've done it for a very good reason, and that's because I want to bring the very best service possible to consumers around the world,” he added.

"We're very confident in when we do launch the open Beta service, it's something that will really resonate with the consumers."

PlayStation Home’s open beta is currently scheduled to begin in late 2008.

more screens from the extended beta:

The newly updated Home has already made a huge leap from the first beta. Each time a small update is released there are a bucket load of changes and additions that improve and impress the quality of Home and it starts to shape the way the PS3 will be used in every games involvement on the PS3 system.

However there are some downsides to the beta that should be addressed with the screenshots taken.

First off, each section of Home has to be downloaded separately. This means that if you want to go from your Harbor Apartment to the Theater, you must download the Theater by walking into the doors. A screen will pop up asking to download and then the section will be added to the locations that you can visit. Each space (Theater, Game Room, Home Square, Market, and second Homes) must be downloaded separate and each one ranges between 40MB and 50MB. This game could start to eat away a nice little space of HDD.

But that is just a little thing that I have not liked about it, and remember it is still only a beta.

Home still scheduled for 2008 apparently:

Van der Meulen is a producer on the Home project, who apparently assured IGN during Games Convention that the service would launch sometime this year. "Van der Meulen told me (without hesitation) that it is a 100 percent guarantee that Home will be released by the end of this calendar year. He has absolutely no doubt that this will be the case," IGN's Ryan Clements reports. Well, there you have it, just blame Van der Meulen when Sony rushes to get you all moved in later this year and, with the first step you take into your new Home, you fall right through the ... map.

Uk magazine PLAY find Home boring:

What were we dreaming of? GT5 garages? Trophy cases showcasing our Uncharted skills? Whorehouses? If not these things, we were hoping for a fresh, vibrant and innovative way of networking on the PS3; this, though, is not the first opinion that strikes you, upon entering Home.

At the beginning, the outlook is much more depressing. The initial process of designing your character is fun, given that everything from lips, head size and build can be adjusted to your satisfaction, but it’s those first moments of aimlessly walking around that can be quite alienating. You begin in your empty apartment, with a door leading to the outside world and a seaside view from the windows in your room. Upon walking through the door, we were greeted with a sight that is unfortunately indicative of the Home experience: a download screen. For every new building that we entered, a 30-50mb additional update was needed, which was a little bit frustrating– why not condense everything into one 500mb download, and cut out the middleman? Perhaps this is something they’ll work on before it’s unveiled to the public.

As the service became populated, we saw how it all came together. Home, when brimming with life, excitement and conversation is something that you’ll want to be a part of, and it could genuinely work as a social tool. The PS3 lacks a decent community aspect, and Home, if implemented properly, could very well bring the Network to a higher standard. It could be worth the wait.

My one and ONLY question I need to ask and it's what I'm concerned with the most:

How much will it cost?

Obviously the high price of the PS3 is why I don't have it... also, (correct me if I'm wrong here) it's not backwards compatible with it's predecessors (PSX/PS2) - Only Blueray doo-hickys

If drama is so bad, then why are there college majors in it?

news update for Home:

PlayStation Home Community Ted the Dog has come out to give us an idea of what we can expect regarding Home over the coming weeks:

1. The version 1.0 Patch Notes will be published in the closed beta forum so they know what to expect and to help plan testing.
2. A couple of days later Version 1.0 will be released into the Closed beta. That will not happen this week.
3. SCEE will be inviting a large number of extra testers into the closed beta to load test and that process will start within a day or so of v1.0 going live. We wont invite them all straight away, we'll ramp it up over a a period of time. We will be inviting non-English speaking testers for the first time. Languages covered will be English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. Please remember these are languages, not countries, so more than the immediately obvious countries will be included to a degree. The lists have been chosen already, dont try changing your language to get included!
4. Once we start inviting people in to the Closed Beta the public SCEE Home forums will become the Home beta test forums.
5. The date of Open Beta start will be announced in advance
6. Open Beta starts and that will be just as it implies, Open to all

Ready to go Home? Its launched

Home’s here, Sony’s announced in a note on the PS Blog, confirming that the little logo is now available in the XMB of all PS3 owners worldwide.

“Getting to this point has required a tremendous amount of participation, input, care, and passion from the thousands of beta testers who helped make PlayStation Home what it is today,” said Jack Buser, Home director.

“So to all of you that have tested, from all of us on the PlayStation Home team here at Sony: ‘Thank You!’”

Home launched earlier this evening in what appeared to be a smooth roll-out, although the app is experiencing some connection issues.

1.10 Update set to address a few things:

* The speed of the initial log-on process has been improved and a progress bar has been added to provide you with more information about what is happening.
* Download priorities have been changed so that certain graphics and images (like thumbnail images and World Map chips) will download more quickly.
* You should now be able to use two-seater sofas properly.

Of course the monumental fix is the ability for users to use the "Block Chat" option. Before, players could only choose "Block voice chat." Block Chat kills voice and text communication. It also automatically blocks the offender from Friends Lists. It’s a handy UI tweak, but more importantly, allows for more sensibility in Home.

* We have added a new "Remove Player" function that allows the creator to remove people from a Game Launching session. This is complemented by the Block Player function, accessible via the Safe Screen, which can be used to stop people rejoining.

* The speed of the initial log-on process has been improved and a progress bar has been added to provide you with more information about what is happening.
* Items that you have already purchased will now be loaded when you first log-in, reducing the loading time when you enter stores in the Mall.
* Other players' avatars will now load faster when you enter a space.
* The names of Home reward items will now be shown when you obtain them.
* Download priorities have been changed so that certain graphics and images (like thumbnail images and World Map chips) will download more quickly.
* The inventory system (that stores Home Reward items) has been reworked and made more robust. We have also implemented additional safeguards to help ensure that you cannot inadvertently lose any of your items.
* The Chat log window will now always be displayed on top of any other on-screen graphics, except when zoomed in to a video or poster. When zoomed in, the chat window will no longer display.
* The size of the text box has been improved on message boards in Clubhouses.
* The option to "Block voice chat" has been changed to "Block chat," which will allow you to block both voice chat and text chat at the same time. Players blocked with this feature will not be automatically added to the block list on your Friends list.
* The game camera will now go into attract mode once you have been idle for more than 3 minutes.
* The "Resign sub leader" command has been removed from the Menu Pad. Club leaders will now have to downgrade sub leaders if they wish.
* We have further improved the UI for a variety of systems including Game Launching, Clubhouses and the Store.
* We have made several memory optimizations to improve client stability.
* We have made graphical improvements to particle systems and water effects.

bug fixes

* Furniture in Personal Spaces will no longer occasionally vanish when you leave lights or lamps turned on.
* Single-seat chairs and sofas can no longer be occupied by more than one person at a time.
* You can now turn lighting objects on/off in your Personal Space.
* Furniture layout issues in Clubhouses have been resolved.
* The "Refresh Club Menus" option in the Menu Pad should now work as intended.
* Dates will now be displayed on Clubhouse bulletin board messages.
* A fix has been applied to the Home Safe Screen reporting process.
* Your screen will no longer freeze if you leave a game session with the game disc ejected.
* Item names and prices will now display correctly in the Mall.
* Wallpapers will now be displayed properly when you invite friends to your Harbour Studio.
* You will no longer be able to make a phone call to players who have deactivated voice chat.
* You should now be able to use two-seater sofas properly.

Home 1.10 update bringing a ton of fixes, sofas now seat properly [Update]
