Right, so I was playing NFS earlier, and it happened upon me, that I actually preferred to be in 2nd place over being the leader, especially for the first lap or two on a street course. It sort of gives me the feel for the course, as well as the kind of pace that the other racers are running, so I know what I need to do to pass the leader and maintain that lead to the finish line.

Also, it allows me to see certain situations in front of me before they happen, like a sharp corner, you see the leader brake/slow down, you can do the same rather than charging into it too fast and wiping out...

Of course, only for the first lap or two, after that, it's on.

Your thoughts?

I'd be the opposite. With racing games, if I don't gain the lead early on, that's it. I find it much easier to relax and get the swing of a lap if I'm ahead, because otherwise I'm thinking, "I'll never catch up if I don't turn sharp enough here".... I tend to jinx myself.

Eh, usually I drive the first time and lose (in the harder levels), then just drive and take the lead at any point.

Doesn't really matter anyways, most games give your opponents an unfair advantage over you if they're behind a lot. NFS:MW does that too, sometimes an opponent (blacklist dude, for example) gets stuck on an edge somewhere, he gets behind like... off the minimap. When he regains control again, he's on your arse within a minute again, even when you've been able to drive top-speed and perfectly etc.

While it makes the game somewhat more interesting, it's a terrible downer on realism.

I'd rather take the lead from the gun and maintain it throughout the race, although giving it a lap to get a good feel for the course (if it's the first time playing through) is not generally a bad idea, but I can feel for it in first just as good as if I were in second.
