In my mind, its Xenogears for both categories.
Its story was mind-boggling complex, with so many different tangents and story arcs it blows any RPG out of the water easily.
The combat system was easy and intuitive, yet complex. It allowed for multiple fighting styles, both mech and human, and had 10-18 combos for each person (human) and 9 for Mech.
Even back on the PS1 when it came out, it didn't go with the random battle thing like every RPG seems to favor. Instead it blended it with on-screen enemies....creating a decent balance.
Anyone else? |

| I would say the best current-gen RPG is Baten Kaitos. For older systems, Xenogears would also be high on my list of achievers, along with Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound, and Chrono Trigger. |

| Favorite... undeniably FF7. As for the best, it's a hard call. I'm very tempted to say FF6, because it was a damn good game. |

Favourite will always be Final Fantasy VI. Best is a tie between Suikoden II, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest V and Final Fantasy VI. Still haven’t played Xenogears yet, though, so my opinion on that may change |

Shin Megami Tensei's Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, and Persona 2. The enviorments are dark, gritty, moody, and bare a religious undertone throughout all of the SMT games.
Then theres Dragon Quest VIII and Suikoden 3. Story and battle mechanics are dead on. |

Favourite : Chrono Trigger
Best RPG? Hard to say. It's a tie between Chrono Cross, Shin Megami Tensei and Final Fantasy Tactics. |

I personally like TES3: Morrowind. Haven't played TES4 yet though, so don't pin me down on it.
It's just huge, has an excellent experience system (which, with the right knowledge, can be easily exploited), good story, enormous amount of quests, and a real sense of immersion.
TES3 was rather static though, not really dynamic, and the quests were all a bit so-so, IMO. But even with that, it's still the best RPG I've ever played.
Note that I haven't played anything noted in this thread outside the FF games though. |

Apparently TES4 is more or less like TES3, except its bigger, shinier, more dynamic and...horses. No more walking. 'nuff said |

IMHO, I think Morrowind and Oblivion tie as being best open-ended rpgs. CTM, I personally think that while there are similaries between TES3 and TES4, some stuffs have greately improved on TES4.
When I played as a mage character in TES3, it was a major pain in the butt 'coz I was dang weak. I like how easy potions can be created in TES4 and heal and fireball spell in it.
In my book, best rpgs are as the following:
1. Morrowind, Oblivion
2. Phantasy Star I, II, and IV.
3. Phantasy Star Online, Final Fantasy VII
4.Chrono Cross
5. Arabian Nights
6. Der Langrissa |
