News for movie heads: Gears of War: The Movie is continuing its march from good idea to your local multiplex. Len Wiseman has signed on to direct the movie, and it's being produced by Temple Hill's Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.
Chris Morgan,(Wanted and The Fast and the Furious 4,) will write the screenplay. Wiseman and Morgan will develop the story treatment.
According to the Hollywood insiders at The Hollywood Reporter:
"The movement on the project suggests that the reconfigured New Line won't be confined to horror, thrillers and low-budget comedies but will be able to tackle big-budget projects outside the scope initially ascribed to the Warner Bros. division."
Whatever, we say. Just make a great movie. Wiseman's past credits as director include: Live Free or Die Harder and Underworld: Evolution.
So, what do you think? Good choice, or are we going to see another beloved gaming property ruined by Hollywood?

I think its inevitable that most will fail, i suppose translating games to the big screen takes something away from the 'experience' one has as a player, as opposed to just a viewer.

Fourth resi evil movie hinted....
MTV’s Movie blog is reporting that director Paul W.S Anderson is considering the possibility of returning for a fourth instalment in Sony Pictures highly successful Resident Evil movie franchise.
Anderson, who directed the first adaptation of the Survival Horror series in 2002 and subsequently went on to produce it’s two sequels, revealed, “I’m just starting to talk to Sony about it.”
“I don’t even know if anything will come of it, but there’s a possibility it might happen.”
Despite his enthusiasm for the franchise, Anderson was keen to point out that the right script would have to be in place in order to pursue the project, adding, “I love the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise and we always try to make the best possible movie we can. If we could find a good ‘Resident Evil 4’ to make, then we would do it.”
“But I wouldn’t just do it for the sake of it, that’s for sure,” he said.

David Hayter talks Lost planet film adaptation....
On Friday, Hayter hosted an open Q&A panel with an audience of several thousand enthusiastic fans. While a majority of the questions were related to the Metal Gear Solid game franchise and countless requests to recite lines as Snake, Hayter did make mention of two new projects he is engaged in: an unannounced action/adventure film that he will likely direct, and a screenplay for the film adaptation of Capcom's Lost Planet. As of June, Hayter was engaged in preliminary talks to draft the latest game-to-film, however, when we spoke to him at an press exclusive panel this afternoon, it would seem that Lost Planet is closer to fruition than previously thought.
"It's not entirely confirmed yet," said Hayter. "But we are just closing the deal with Warner Bros. for me to adapt Lost Planet." Unfortunately, due to Hayter's contractual agreements, we were unable to obtain more specific information about the film. However, we did get a chance to probe into Hayter's approach to adapting games to film, having now been slated to write the adaptation for Lost Planet, and a treatment for the potential adaptation of Metal Gear Solid.
"There is gap in Hollywood between people who write good movies and those who appreciate good video games," he said. "I'm fortunate enough to be in both worlds. For myself, I try to make an effort to take the essence of the game, keep as much of that as possible, and still put it into a proper film structure."
Hayter continued to elaborate on the hit-or-miss nature of game adaptations, stating that the primary problem is that the size of a title's fan base directly correlates to a studio's commitment to quality. In response to more specific concerns regarding Lost Planet, Hayter went on to discuss aspects of the game that he intends on considering before writing the film adaptation.
"When they gave me Lost Planet to play to see if I wanted to write the movie, I looked at the environments, I looked at the vital suits, the armor, the creatures, and watched the story," he explained. "While I couldn't take those scenes and put them up verbatim, I can appreciate the core of the story and what it is about the character's journeys that grab people."

Clips of the Max Payne movie were shown at comic con:
actor Mark Wahlberg took to the stage for an open panel with co-star Mila Kunis and director John Moore.
An extended version of the recently released trailer was then shown to fans, as well as several clips from the film.
Garth Franklin at Dark Horizons broke down the series of events:
Director John Moore says that the video game adaptation uses a lot of subjective viewpoints with the camera to make the audience feel like they are Max Payne, thus they "kick the s**t out of the camera" throughout. The film uses a hard drive camera system called Phantom which can shoot up to 1000 frames per second, allowing for super slow motion shots.
Mila Kunis says she did some weapons and baton training for the film and she gets to beat Mark Wahlberg up in the feature. Kunis also got to speak various swear words in her native Russian language. Ludacris, taking on a role originally written for a older white male, plays a smart internal affairs agent who's on Payne's heels throughout the film.
The panel showed three clips, the first has an old car pulling up to an apartment building. Mark Wahlberg enters, gun up, looking for someone named Alex. He finds a body dead on a floor and an unseen attacker dressed in black proceeds to thrash him.
The second is set in a subway station where three hoods follow Payne (Wahlberg) into the bathroom and try to get his watch. Payne however tells them details of what they were up to earlier in the day. This pisses them off, thinking they've been followed. Wahlberg knocks one out, proceeds to shoot the stalls as one crim tries to crawl away, and the third runs off along the subway tracks.
The third is a special Comic-Con exclusive trailer/clip set to the 'Whole Lotta Love' song. The primary scene is Payne engaging successfully in a shoot-out with a SWAT team. There's also glimpses of demons, "Prison Break" star Amaury Nolesco with interesting facial tattoos playing some kind of crime lord, Wahlberg doing a flip backwards and firing off a rifle.
Mr. Beaks over at AintItCool didn't like what he saw:
..while MAX PAYNE looks like ten tons of agreeable silly, the major action sequence Fox proudly unspooled played like Brett Ratner's remake of DIE HARD: basically, it's a huge office shootout in which glass is shattered, sprinkler systems are triggered, and Payne sustains a good bit of damage. The major difference is that, in DIE HARD, there was a reason for Hans Gruber to order the random destruction of glass (McClane's bare feet); in MAX PAYNE, it's just an aesthetic consideration for the filmmaker (i.e. John Moore).
They also showed us a special, extended-for-Comic-Con trailer that was cut (badly) to an alternate Led Zeppelin recording of "Whole Lotta Love". Put me off the movie entirely.
But FreeScreeningWhore thought the film seemed faithful and fun:
The Max Payne footage was great, very much like the games. (definitely saw some graffiti of that drug logo. Can't remember the name, starts with a "v") Mila Kunis seemed uncomfortable. The panel ended with some sweet super-duper-digital-something slow motion footage, and everyone's heart was a-twitter. Fun.
Finally, Slashfilm chimes in with this recounting:
If you're a fan of the game, you would be excited of what we had the privilege to witness. For instance, one scene involved Max Payne following some junkies into a subway system. As he passed them, they were sitting on a bench, he took a right into the bathroom. The next thing we saw was Payne looking into the mirror, he noticed the reflection behind him were the junkies. A shootout soon took place inside the bathroom. If anyone has played just the beginning of the game, the set where this taking place will seem very familiar.
Some other perks from the game, has Max Pax Payne narrating how he feels, using very dark metaphorical dialogue, but making it as simple sounding as it can, giving the feeling like you're listing to someone read a comic book.
The last thing we were shown was a 3 minute highlight reel of the movie. It started with a zoomed shot of a barrel of a handgun, then with the same single shot started zooming back, until you saw Mark Wahlberg standing holding the gun in in a alleyway while it was snowing. It went on with Led Zeppelin's "Candy Store Rock" blasting in the background and seeing quick clips of various gun fights and showing different characters Max Payne will encounter, including dream sequence that are involved with the game. It ended with with a scene showing Max Payne holding a hostage in a office with an swat team of about ten, holding guns pointing to Payne. He throws the hostage to the ground and a fire fight ensues. Payne on one side of the room, the swat team on the other. Max Payne then tries to sneak to the other side of the room, ducking and dodging bullets by using the office desks as cover. At one point the emergency sprinklers go off, giving the firefight a little beauty to the scene.
At the end of the firefight, we see Max Payne dive, while shooting at a door to unlock it. The clip then slows down, using a bullet time effect much like what the game does. John Moore briefly discussed how they achieved bullet time. by Using a hard drive called Phantom. Phantom is a machine that can record video at 1000 Frames per second, which gives the effect of slowing down time time to the thousandth degree. The effect gives a smooth rendition of what the game does so well.
All in all, the movie has beautiful cinematic shots but the question remains, will the story be worth watching? Again, they seemed to keep the simple dialogue from the game, I'm not sure how well that will translate for a full movie.

There, in my opinion, has never been a successful game to movie transition. In The Name Of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale had no relevance to the game plot, other then you started on a farm with a pick-Axe.
Every time a film company says "Were making ....... Into a movie" I shudder, as nearly all directors (Not including Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi or Gabrielle Muccino) have little compassion towards there work, and little faithfulness to the fans.

yeah i know i start to say its not a game into a movie its just a new movie b/c thats all it really is
i know this is about games into movies but oh well someone interviewed stan lee and its pretty much on the subject he talking about movies vs. games:
"When you talk about games evolving over the years and becoming more like movies, in many ways, they've gone beyond movies. To do a movie is difficult, but it's linear. There's a beginning, a middle and an end, and that's it - you write a story. In a videogame, you're writing many stories within the story. It's a totally different structure and a totally different philosophy of writing and, I think, a much, much more difficult one. I get the feeling more work goes into these videogames than even goes into the movies."
and one last thing hopefully gears of war can redeem it heres some info:
The Dark Knight, 300, Batman Begins - if those aren't enough reasons to say that production company Legendary Pictures has quite an incredible rep, we don't know what else to tell you.
Soon, the Gears of War movie will join the production company's amazing film roster as they have agreed with New Line Cinema to co-produce and finance the video game movie adaptation. The movie will still be directed by Len Wiseman, who also directed both Underworld movies and Live Free or Die Hard, and the screenplay will be written by Chris Morgan who worked on the recent Angelina Jolie action flick, Wanted.
Legendary Pictures also produced the Watchmen movie coming out in 2009 and is producing the long-anticipated big screen invasion of the massive World of Warcraft film. Gears of War 2 developed by Epic Games will be coming out this November 7 exclusively for the Xbox 360.

God of War movie director revealed?
It appears we've run into more details for the upcoming God of War movie under Universal Studios. The rather unlikely source of this info is a recent MGM press wire announcing the studio's plans to release a new RoboCop movie this 2010, to be written by David Self.
While that's already pretty big news in itself (though not gaming-related), here was the segment of MGM's PR that caught our attention:
David Self's credits include 13 Days and Road To Perdition. He wrote God of War for Universal, to which Brett Ratner is attached to direct, and was a writer on Universal's Wolfman currently in production. He is represented by UTA and attorney Karl Austen.

Prince of Persia movie pushed back til 2010:
Paramount is apparently still forging ahead with making Iron Man 2 in time for a 2010 release date, but at least one studio seems to have the sense to give a movie enough time to properly develop its special effects. Disney has delayed the release of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time until 2010, saying they want to allow plenty of time for post-production work. Variety also notes that the possibility of an actors’ strike means Disney probably wants to build in as much extra time as possible.
The film is, of course, coming out the same summer as Iron Man 2, but since its already started filming, it has a major head start. The release date change also moves it away from Transformers 2, which would have come out a week after Prince of Persia debuted, and puts it nearer Shrek Goes Fourth, a family movie likely to be much less competition.

Duke Nukem movie next for the big screen:
Scott Faye, a producer of Max Payne, told Kotaku.com that he's already hard at work at bringing Duke Nukem to the big screen as well.
“I'm working diligently at making a Duke Nukem movie scenario that will live up to the character and its import in the videogame world,” said the producer, who is already working with Nukem and Payne developer Scott Miller. “As is the case with all of my game adaptations, I'd rather not make the movie than make a poor adaptation.”
Faye also has a lot of development in mind for the character, which is pretty necessary when you're moving from a video game to an actual movie, with an actual story. "“We're expanding Duke's ‘storyverse’ in a very significant major way without abandoning or negating any element that's being used to introduce Duke to the next gen platforms."

Avi arad has optioned movie rights to mass effect:
"Mass Effect" has started its journey to the big screen. Numerous sources have confirmed that producer Avi Arad has optioned the rights to Bioware's sci-fi RPG from the developer's parent publisher Electronic Arts.
Turning "Mass Effect" into a movie, or at least trying to do so, is pretty much a no-brainer. Even those who didn't love it would have to admit that it has a lot more meat to its narrative than most games. You've got a hard-ass protagonist, a crusty bureaucracy trying to hold him back, a motley supporting cast, a hugely diverse (if a bit similar looking) bunch of settings, and an alien invasion fueled by technology that nobody but our hero fully understands.
Those are certainly a lot of standard elements for a science-fiction movie. Though "Mass Effect, rather intriguingly, has a main character whose look and personality and even gender can, to some extent, be shaped by the player. So the makers of a movie will have to figure out just who exactly Commander Shephard is.
Arad was for a long time the head of Marvel's movie business, where he helped start the new wave of actually good comic book movie franchises like "X-Men," "Spider-Man," and "Iron Man" (OK, there was "Spider-Man 3" and "Elektra" and "Ghost Rider," but there's still no denying Marvel movies are much improved). Now he runs his own production company and has been getting into videogame adaptations, starting recently with "Lost Planet."
Both EA and Arad declined to comment, but it's a good bet that Avi is right now trying to put together the elements to get a movie going, including a writer, director, and most importantly, setting it up at a studio. When and if that happens, we'll have a lot more insight into just what kind of a movie "Mass Effect" might be.
As for EA, this fits well into its strategy of turning its fully-owned games into multi-media properties (witness the "Dead Space" direct-to-DVD movie, comic books, etc.) Not that there was really any doubt when it spent $860 million to buy Bioware and Pandemic, but I'd say a movie deal is even more evidence that "Mass Effect 2" is in on the way from EA.

Another Clock Tower cast addition it seems:
We've got another update on the cast for the upcoming Clock Tower film: Alyssa Hale is in "final talks" to join the cast of the film, making herself the second named actress for the film, alongside Brittany Snow
The actress previously debuted in Divine Intervention, and incidentally, shares the name of the title character of the original Clock Tower game. She'll need more than just a shared name to curry favour with the audience -- Divine Intervention has less than favourable reviews, when I can actually find them.

When it comes to the big screen adventure, Arad said the plan is to mix things up a little bit. In the game, the action moves were very quickly to the island, but the film will open things up a bid and add some depth before the island adventure.
