I think that this series has the best storyline and themes of any video game series, and dare I say movie or book, to date. The character development is particularly awesome, not to mention the twists upon twists revealed over the course of five games. The dialogue, too, is very, very nice. It's a pretty damn hard plot to follow, and requires more than one playthrough to understand it, as it focuses heavily on time travel. One of the most important themes of the story is whether or not you can alter and take control of your own fate, if you know what your fate is already going to be. This probably one of the only time travel plots that doesn't have any faults or contradictions (everything can be explained if you pay enough attention to the details).
Enough about the story though. The voice acting for the series is phenomenal. On par with, if not better than Metal Gear Solid. I'm sure many would agree that Kain has one of the most powerful, chilling and well suited voices in the history of gaming.
The biggest problem with the series as a whole, and this is quite sad, is the gameplay. It's nothing innovative, it's very generic, very repetitive and very, very limited.
That aside, I urge anyone to try this series out. It'll be well worth it. |

| To each his own, I suppose. I doubt you actually invested enough time into it to get an understanding of the plot though, because I don't see how anyone couldn't be impressed by the sheer genius of it, whether or not you actually enjoy the plot is irrelevant. |

Erm, how can I say this? Sorry about that last post it wasn't actually me, t'was a friend of mine who was here. Sorry again.
As for my own opinion well I only ever played Soul Reaver and I didn't get that far with it, I think it was because it gave me a bit of motion sickness, very few games do that to me but that was one of them. |

| Man, that sucks. Motion sickness from such a good game. |

I'll agree, this is a fantastic series.
I thought Soul Reaver 2 ended a little abruptly. I was playing along, watching some great scenes and then the game just...ends and I'm left thinking "What the ****?". The dialogue is good too and I couldn't imagine a better casting for the voice actors. Both Raziel and Kain manage to sound like the versed intellectuals they are.
I haven't managed to play either of the Kain games, though. What am I missing? |

Soul Reaver 2 ended abruptly indeed. It's due to the fact that the games, especially Soul Reaver, Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance are the ones that cover the major plot arc of the series, and you need to play all three.
As for what you're missing out on the Kain games, well... I've played a demo for the original Blood Omen, it's very old and is in a typical top down pc rpg style game. Very hack and slash. The story is quite good though, I'd recommend playing it or at least reading a plot guide to get a full account of Kain's previous efforts and his rise to power.
Blood Omen 2 is... quite honestly disgusting. It only barely ties into the rest of the continuity set down by the series, it was handled by a different creative team (which made problems for Amy Hennig when she returned to do Defiance.)
Play BO2 if you really want to get the entire story, but it's not technically necessary. |

Going from what you said, I'd be better just buying Defiance and finishing the bits of the saga I've missed that way. I did see Blood Omen being played, way before I had bothered to pay attention to the games. It didn't look too thrilling |

Indeed, the series never became a hit until Amy Hennig and her creative team took control of it (which was with Soul Reaver.) |
