More info about what v2.20 might contain:

PC World recently revealed that PS3 FW 2.20 will support "Portable Copy". Essentially, it strengthens the bond of Sony's console with its handheld counterpart, the PlayStation Portable, by allowing movie sharing.

Portable Copy lets users create standard-definition versions of Blu-ray movies and transfers them to the PSP.

This goes with other enhancements that BD-Live, otherwise known as Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, will bring.

The PS3 firmware 2.20 is now out sans Portable Copy- Sony didnt include it:

Here are some of the other new features/enhancements that will be included in Firmware v2.20:

The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.

You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB. In addition, you can now display subtitles when viewing DivX files.

Resume Play - begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.

Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV

The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster. In addition [Save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media

There are a few other tweaks and upgrades included in v2.20 - we’ll provide more specifics as the update is about to go live.
Updates:
Most notably, the update enables the PS3 to support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live. You can connect now to the Internet while playing discs that support BD-Live to obtain additional content and special features. These features vary from disc to disc, and will keep your BD discs fresh with new content and in some cases exclusive content only accessible to owners of BD-Live enabled discs. On April 8th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The 6th Day and Walk Hard on Blu-ray; these titles will be among the first to take advantage of BD-Live. With this update, the PLAYSTATION 3 becomes the first Blu-ray player on the market with BD-Live functionality.

PS3 firmware update v2.30 now available:

The update is primarily to localise the PS Store so that it is no longer HTML based and will allow faster access to the revamped system. The new store should be available once you have upgraded your PS3’s firmware.

Also included in the upgrade is improved sound technology

DTS-HD Master Audio is literally bit-for-bit identical to the studio master recording and makes movie soundtracks and sound effects truly come to life. The technology delivers audio at the incredibly high rate of 24.5 mega-bits per second (Mbps) on Blu-ray disc, which is significantly higher than standard DVDs. DTS-HD Master Audio also offers 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24 bit depths, so you’ll be totally immersed in the sound. The firmware update will add DTS-HD High Resolution Audio as well, which is a similar output technology that requires less disc space

PS3 video download service coming soon?

A lot of PlayStation 3 gamers out there are looking forward to the upcoming video download service for the PlayStation Store, but aside from promises that it'll launch "shortly," we still don't have any idea when it will see the light of day.

A news report from the LA Times has given a more specific release date than "soon." According to the report, unnamed executives have revealed that the service will launch as early as this summer, although they don't give anything more specific than that.

It's not official confirmation, but the timing is plausible. The E3 convention will be held in July, so it wouldn't be surprising if they decide to release it near, or even during, the event. All we can do right now is cross our fingers and wait for confirmation straight from Sony. So, for now, we'll be notching this up as Rumor as well.

The launch of the video download service is a significant event for the PlayStation 3, as it would signal a more active competition against Xbox Live. It's significant for PSP gamers as well, as it could very well signal the arrival of Portable Copy, or even the PSP's own video download service.

Introduction of external ps3 hard drives?

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) boss David Reeves admitted as much after a talk with Eurogamer regarding the 40GB PS3 unit. He hinted the possibility of introducing official external hard drives into the market as he explained several things regarding the current SKU being rolled out.

He mentioned that moving to the 40GB configuration was mostly due to lowering the price of the console for their consumers. However, he wasn't sure how long Sony will be keeping this current setup and opened the possibility of allowing gamers to choose from a wider variety in the future.

He was quoted having said this:

The PlayStation will stay the same, but consumers can choose whichever size of hard drive they want. They can now, or course, because it's not a proprietary hard drive.

It might be that we will offer the possibility for people to have a bigger hard drive, but they have that option now. But it does not mean that we have anything in the works to introduce a different model or bigger hard drive built in.

External hard drives can currently be plugged into the console's USB cable attachment, giving users an option to swap hard drives with the one inside the PS3. Reeves said that he wanted to keep things simple for now and stick to the cards they currently have on the table. Larger capacities will definitely be needed in the future when services like PlayTV becomes more commonplace for the PS3 user on the lookout for a larger multimedia library

PS3 Devs now have DIVX technology to work with...

So the Sony PlayStation 3 can already play DivX videos, right? DivX is taking it one step further: they've announced that their video encoding technology is now available to PS3 game developers.

This means that developers can now create DivX videos for their PS3 releases. "PS3 users can already use their PS3s to watch their own DivX videos," said DivX CEO Kevin Hall, "and now they’'ll also be able to enjoy the quality of DivX in the games."
