Besides all the damn Star Wars references in Final VI, anyway..
List references to things you might have noticed in some games. Post them here.
Included as well-Easter eggs and all sorts of crap in that style.
Why?
Who cares, just do it.
I found one in Chrono Trigger, although I really can't tell if it was intentional or not...
When you're in Magus's castle, there's a scene in which all the characters are visited by people they know, but which turn out to be monsters taking shapes and tricking you into a fight.
Like Crono sees his mom, Glen his mentor, Lucca her father and so on...
Well, there's a movie called It, originally a novel by Stephen King, but anyways in the end of the first film, all the kids are deep inside the old sewers, and they see people they know, trying to lure them away from their ..uh..defense circle or whatever.. But it's actually It.
Like Beverly sees her dad, Bill his brother and Ritchie sees the werewolf he saw in a movie.
Plus both settings are in some old, dark and creepy ruined environment.
I thought it was odd, but it could easily be a coincidence too I guess.
And this one's a FACT!- There's a novel named Ayla, which is about a cavewomen leading her people to survival.
Kind of sounds like Ayla in the game, since she's like the strongest one, and takes charge of the village. Plus there's Kino, and that's supposed to mean tomorrow in Japanese, which would reflect once again the novel I'm talking about.
The heroine leading her people to a better future?
Anyways, your turn. |

FFIV referenced William Shatner’s bad acting in FFIV, although I think that was just something J2e threw in there for teh funneh.
The Chrono Trigger thing is in FFV as well. Leina and Faris see King Tycoon, Batz sees Dorgan, and Galuf sees Cara (but since he’s amnesiac, he can’t remember who she is), but it’s all a ploy by this siren type monster to try to trick them. I think there’s something like that in mythology as well (though I can’t remember the name of the legend), so CT and King probably just both took it from that.
Can’t remember anything else off the top of my head, except all the mythological and literary references in enemy names, which would take me hours to list (and since I’m going to have to bugger off to drive three hours in a few minutes, I can’t do it now). |

Aye, the names make hundreds of references. I think for the sake of succinctness we should steer from religious references in FF names (be them Norse, Christian, Jewish, etc.) unless you come across an unknown/interesting one.
I really enjoyed the references to the old sci-fi movies in MGS3's conversations after saving. I used to watch those when I was a kid and it was hilarious how Snake responded to them.

Actaully, you're taking about Clan of the Cave Bear, in which Ayla isn't a neanderthal but instead is an advanced human species raised by Neanderthals. But yeah, a great reference. |

Actually yeah, that would make more sense. But what mythology is that..?
If you guys want a list of mythological references in Final Fantasy (Which will apply to other RPG's.) there's this site here.

Go to the section about name origins.
But by references, I meant really like scenes or things that blink towards other games/movies/books or whatever, not really mythology.
But really, you can include what you want. It will just make it all the more interesting. |

| I don’t honestly remember what mythology it’s from. I just remember hearing it when I was studying mythology in depth at like eight or nine. So it’s probably from Greco-Roman mythology. |

| What, sirens? They're from Greek mythology. Odysseus and the Argonauts among others encountered the sirens on their journeys. |

| Nah, I don’t think sirens actually took on the form of someone’s memories. Think that was a different legend. |

Well...dopplegangers are basically shape shifters..but uh..I know nothing of them.
The first I ever heard of those was in Castlevania Symphony of the Night. But they must come from somewhere, right?
I mean are they undead or not, what? |

The doppelgängers of folklore cast no shadow, and have no reflection in a mirror or in water. They are supposed to provide advice to the person they shadow, but this advice can be misleading or malicious. They can also, in rare instances, plant ideas in their victim's mind or appear before friends and relatives, causing confusion. In many cases once someone has viewed their own doppelganger they are doomed to be haunted by images of their ghostly counter part.
|
However, it doesn't actually say what folklore they are from. How useless. |
