Metal Gear Solid's Raiden is by far the best character to grace a computer game ever. I know many of you are big fans of Solid Snake, or the newly used Big Boss, or even Ocelot, but I've never had anyone agree with me Raiden is the best. Think about it, more than alot of thought went into his creation, maybe not his past or his social references with Rose, maybe not even his affiliation with the computerized colonell campbell, but overall, his character as a person is fantastic.
He's young. He's new to the entirity of Foxhound. He's very out-going for a youngster, but also weary of alot of things. You can just tell he's scared, which is obvious for him being so young, but he does it in a style where nobody around him can tell, only us, the audience. Now if he was real, that'd be absolutely amazing.
Also, he whines. He's put into alot of new surroundings, and endures things beyond any Psycho Mantis with Fortune and Vamp, and also Fatman. So he whines and gets on other characters nerves a little, but this is expected, and whines in the best place possible, and it makes him so much better.
His appearance is a soft, pretty boy, adding more to the effect of he's not suitable for the job, and he's not exactly the best choice for Foxhound, hence Pliskin's (Solid Snake) response upon hearing the news after asking about the suite. I agree, if I were selecting a man to go on the 'Plant' mission, it sure as hell wouldn't be Raiden if it were reality, but as the audience, it makes Raiden so much better, because he doesn't suit the role, and he whines, but it's all for a good underdog reason when he's shaking the gun upon approaching Vamp etc.
I personally, would have Raiden over Solid Snake, Ocelot, Big Boss, Liquid Snake, Solidus, Otacon, Meryl, Eva anyday. He's the best character on MGS, and the best character I'd go as far as saying ever. I guess my obsession with MGS also helps, but yeah. Raiden > All, and to see him in MGS4 makes me orgasm.

...And I am probably the only person on this forum that agrees with you.
I wouldn't say he's better than Snake though, but I do love his character. And now that he's the new ninja, nobody can say he's not a bit of a badass, especially if they've seen him in action! |

Turncoat.
I will actually go ahead and say that I truly enjoy Raiden's character more than Solid Snake. He's got more of an interesting background, and while he doesn't have the cool and collective disposition of Snake, he has many finer points to his personality. I think the only thing holding him back was his whiny voice actor. Raiden wasn't really all that bad, and I love how he was brought in and used for the S3 program.
I need not discuss his excellence in MGS4. |

I swear, if that was original your post I'd want to e-marry you, Michael. However, it wasn't.
I actually look forward to seeing how it pans out with Raiden in MGS4. He's too good not to be a major character, so we'll see eh? I know I'll be queing at 12:00 AM when it's released for the PS3. I'm already guarnteed a PS3, so wh00t.
-abel-, I actually thought his voice actor was fabulous. He made Raiden appear to whine ever more, which was a great decision, intended or not. |

Now that I think about it, you're right. Him being whiny augments to his depth in the same way Irvine's ego and flirtatious behaviour make one dislike him in FFVIII. It just makes you love him more when he actually comes through in the end (although in Irvine's case, he pussied out of making the shot). |

You just listed the reason why Raiden pisses me off.
One of the only things Raiden was good for, imo, is that he was a vehicle for Kojima to convey some existentialist views, via Raiden's codec conversation with Rose and Campbell, particularly towards the end of the game. |

I can't agree here
Raiden in MGS2 just came off as rather stupid. Snake is pretty wise and all-knowing, whereas Raiden was left i the dark and never bothered to look for the light switch.
Eitherway, Big Boss is my favourite character. He's the badarse behind it all.
Agreed, though. MGS4 Raiden looks the part. |

wow....i was expecting a thread that bashed raiden a lot more. this is quite a surprise.
i was very happy about the inclusion of raiden in MGS2. admitedly, he did have moments in the game that made me want to skip through the codec dialog, but at the same time it was that sense of disgust that almost made me curious as to what he was going to whine about next. something about that left me...interested.
i thought raiden was an all-around amazing character who fit into the the plot very well, probably even better than Snake would have if Snake were to have taken on raiden's role. the whole overlying theme of MGS2 was centered around deception and lies, which raiden very easily fell prey to, which enabled to player to also fall into the plot as well. Snake would have (possibly) picked up on some of the bigger picture and that would have totally ruined the entire plot. it took a somewhat gullible person in order to make the plot what it was.
not to mention the footage of raiden in MGS4 looks absolutely sidiculous. (silly + ridiculous = sidiculous) |

The footage of Raiden taking down those gears in MGS4 is quite possibly the sexiest piece of video I've ever seen in my life... ever. |
