Hey recently brought this the other week. Just wondering if anyone else plays it? Aint played alot cause of the exams but wanted to know from people thats probably further then me in the game (i just entered alexandria) what they thought?

So far i like the dialogue and graphics, and everything else is mostly standard FF game. Only gripe so far is checking your current XP and ressurection a fellow member with a priest.

I bought this game awhile ago, but haven't been able to play it much because I've been busy with school, and I left my PS2 at home. I've played DQ1, DQ5 and DQ6 already, and I've loved all three games; the interface may be a bit clunkier than that of the newer Final Fantasy games, but somehow it doesn't matter to me.

From what I have played of DQ8, I kind of like how there's a bit more diverse range of enemy difficulty in random encounters. Adds quite a bit of challenge to the game, and I always thought it was a bit unrealistic how all the monsters in one area of an RPG were all around the same strength.

I want to finish Dragon Warrior/Quest IV before playing VIII. I heard nothing but good things about it (such as "RPG of the year" by Gamespot).

So far, my favorite Dragon Quest game is V. Pure brillance.

I'd have to concur. There was a pretty obvious influence on FFVI at one point (I think it's pretty obvious once you get to it).

I was also quite shocked how much Chrono Cross owed to DQVI. My estimation of Square's originality has gone down quite a bit since I've played more DQ games.

I bought DQVIII at Xmas when Best Buy had a big sale on it. I played the FFXII demo but not the game yet..I as well was busy with school and plan on starting it soon.

Anyone know how similar it is to any of the FF games?

I'd say it is similar to the first three FF games. It is, just like the rest of the DQ series, very old-school oritented, and it isn't afraid to admit it, which is what gives it its charm, from what I have seen of it. It's deinifely more user-friendly thanks to its full-3D engine that puts Wind Waker's cel-shading to shame in comparison.

I wouldn't recommend the game if you hate leveling up for hours. That doesn't mean that you couldn't enjoy it anyway. DQ games generally have a lot of charm.

Well, I'm pretty used to levelling up for hours after playing KH2 and also FFX2 and FFX. So it's not a big deal to me. I look forward to playing it this summer.

I bought this game a few weeks ago and I believe I have just about finished this game and I'm lovín it.

The world map system is very impressive and it really makes you feel like you are in a "world".

A little things that bug me though, as someone already mentioned is the slow character development (Levelling). I'm used to power-levelling so I spent a few hours hunting down those friggin metal slimes! Also there is the slowness of saving your game and the lack of a soft reset.

Overall this game rocks... but not as good as DQV imo.

I don't believe any DQ game has ever had a soft reset...in fact, it seems to be getting rather rare in recent RPGs.

I remember getting DQVIII in november. I couldn't put it down. The cel shading was damn brilliant, and the way SE and Lvl5 adapted Toriyama's art style, everything looked great, even the less important people and characters. First time I was in town, I spent a while marveling at everything. My jaw dropped when seeing Argonia for the first time if I'm not mistaken.

One thing I loved was the characters, so full of life, you'd never know what they'd say... except for Yangus, his 'Cor blimey!' thing has stuck to me like glue. And King Trode almost always has something to say that will either sound very good or make you feel like pondscum (he sometimes has comments like that if you're doing badly).

Another cool aspect was the weapons, you've got a range of weapons to experiment with as you go on the adventure. Though it takes time and work, the abilities bigotten by use of these weapons can sometimes snatch victory from defeat.

I still do a little bit of it once in a while.

Wonderful game. I beat it and can vouch for it.

It's got a classic touch. Made me feel better than most of the other current RPG games that are all flash and gasp.

O beautiful blooming Rose
with your dripping red petals,
graceful green leaves,
and fragrant, lustrous smell.

Take my blood with those lips.
Taste it with that tongue.
Moisten that throat.
Then wither, scatter.
And then the rose will be pregnant with destruction.

Aye, I beat this game early last semester (January). I really enjoyed it despite the more traditional/generic storyline. I'll definitely play it again some time in the future.

Aaron, damn you for knowing Japanese. There is a movement at this Dragon Quest message board for the North American release of the DQV remake that was released in Japan. But alas, nobody really cares what a hundred 13-year-olds have to say.

I don't actually know Japanese, beyond a few very basic terms; there's an almost complete translation of DQVI here. It was never advertised very well on the Internets, though, so y'no.

DQV translated (this one's actually complete) is here.

Thanks for the links, but I don't really find video games as literature interesting. I need to actually play the game.
