Now that its out in the UK (Yay!) I decided to get it. Its pretty damn good, although I'm not too far into it yet. I have found, however, that Raziel's levels seem to be lacking.... fun, but good nonetheless. The voice acting, as per usual, is incredible, and the graphics have been greatly enhanced from the previous LoK game, Blood Omen 2. The PS2 version, however, does suffer from slowdown at certain points in the game, but not enough to make you hate the game.
I'm still waiting for a chance to get it, but I absolutely adore the LoK series (Though I think the original Blood Omen was the best, and the first Soul Reaver second best.). I've been anticipating this for some time now, I love the voice acting, storyline and the debates about free will and so forth.

I prefer Soul Reaver 2 to Soul Reaver, but I agree with you on Blood Omen. It is the best of the series. Raziel's levels are really quite repetitive at the moment, its a case of: Get one reaver, open door to next reaver, solve puzzle, fight guardians, get new reaver, get to the place where the next level starts. Kain's ones usually involve large amounts of violence, and occasionally getting pieces of the Balance Emblem to enhance the Reaver.
I rented the game yesterday and had an hour or so blast on it last night and a half hour go this morning, pretty good game, first Legacy of Kain game that I've played but it's left a good impression on me. The only thing I can say that is bad about it so far is the camera, it's horrid at times. And also, like you said, Raziels levels seem to be lacking a bit, but otherwise, a good game.

To really understand Defiance, you'd have had to have played the others. You won't know of the origins of Raziel, or what Kain is going on about with his talk of the Scion of Balance, or the origins of the Hylden. Technically, you could play just Soul Reaver 2, and learn quite a bit about the series, but you don't get the full info that you would from playing the others.
True, although that little history part in the booklet gave a tad brief history, not enough to have me know what Kain's on about most of the time, but enough to get me through the chapters with a brief knowledge of what it's all about. xD
I might end up getting those Legacy of Kain games for PSX, could be picked up cheap as **** nowadays. There's about four of them isn't there?
There''s:
Blood Omen - PSX/PC - Best in the series in my opinion. Follows Kain's quest to save the pillars.
Soul Reaver - PSX/PC/DC - Another good one, but nowhere near as good as SR2 or BO. Follows Raziel's quest to destroy Kain after he ordered him into the abyss.
Soul Reaver 2 - PS2/PC - Second best in the series in my opinion. It has Raziel's realization of his true destiny, and his origins.
Blood Omen 2 - PS2/GC/X-BOX - Now, this ones.... different. If you play this, and Blood Omen, but not Soul Reaver 2, you will not be able to figure out what's happened, and why some people are there. This game is about the Hylden, and Kain's first encounter with them.
This game is amazing it took me about two weeks to beat but that was mostly trying to find all the hidden items. Health upgrades and such. I've only played Soul Reaver 2 and I never felt lost through the whole game except maybe when Mobius started babbling but hey, who understands him anyway? xD
I give it a 9/10.
And the camera angles add so much to the game IMO.
