LOS ANGELES, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp.’s (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people) money-losing Xbox video game console gained market share and ranked as the No. 2 machine in the U.S. and European game markets during the recent holiday season, the executive who oversees the company’s game business said on Thursday.

In an interview with Reuters after Microsoft reported its results for the December quarter, Robbie Bach said the company would focus heavily on new software this year after a strong launch for the online gaming component for the Xbox.

Since its Nov. 15, 2001 launch, the $199 Xbox has sold more than 8 million units worldwide, including more than 250,000 $50 starter kits for its Xbox Live online gaming service since that product’s Nov. 2002 launch. Analysts have said Microsoft loses $100 or more on each Xbox unit it produces.

Of the total sold to date, 5.4 million units were sold in North America, 1.8 million were sold in Europe and about 850,000 were sold in the Asia-Pacific region, with just less than half of those in Japan.

In comparison, Sony Corp.’s <6758.T> dominant PlayStation 2 sold 8.5 million PS2 units worldwide in November and December, including more than 4 million units in North America alone. The PS2 network adapter, launched last summer, has sold more than 400,000 units in the United States and Japan.

The PS2 made its North American debut a year ahead of the Xbox and Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s <7974.OS> GameCube.

"We had a very good holiday so it’s fun to finally be able to talk about it," Bach said. "We gained about four share points on the console side in North America (and) another four share points in Europe. We feel very good about where the business is."

Bach did not detail market share figures.

Despite warnings of weak sales from a number of major game publishers and game retailers in mid-December, Bach said the game business had shown some resiliency compared to the retail market in general.

"You have to look at the broad economic situation," he said. "The industry we think actually had a very good holiday."

Last year Microsoft acquired privately-held game developer Rare, in a move that was widely seen as an attempt to bolster the company’s internal game development effort.

Bach downplayed the potential for Microsoft to acquire any full-blown publishers, as has been widely rumored, saying the company would concentrate its attention on smaller, private developers to bolster its internal lineup in any acquisitions.

"Now you’re in a cycle in the games where it is about the software portfolio," he said.

Bach has in past conceded the Xbox has struggled in Japan. Magazine publisher Mediaworks estimated it sold just shy of 63,000 units from Oct. 28 to Jan. 5, about 15 times less than what the PS2 sold.

"We’re very committed to the Japan market," he said. "The challenge in Japan is about differentiating Xbox from our competition."

Official Press Release
Let's hope Nintendo actually picks up the pace, hm? Great news for Xbox though.

your memories,
your attachments.
They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you
They're freeing your soul.

So, if you're frightened of dying and...
and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away.

But if you've made your peace,
then the devils are really angels,
freeing you from the earth.

lol
GC is doing fine, it can do without the fools who think it's "kiddie". nintendo is still putting out the best games. hell, just the trinity (Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Zelda:Wind Waker) can beat out scores of the other system's games

anyway, nothing wrong with x-box doing good; i'm all for it *thumbs-up*

Nintendo will, they always do. I have never seen Nintendo NOT catch up with the competition, I mean the Sega Genesis was 1st for a long time, but then Nintendo came up and beat that aswell.

good to see the xbox is doing well

Yes Nintendo Will Sell Many Consoles Soon But it won't be enough.

Methinks The only reason PS2 is doing FAR FAR better is cause they have been out 1 year+ before the xbox and gamecube.
