Right, I devised this little theory today.
One assumes that Maester Mika ordered followers to guard the temples of Yevon throughout Spira, and he ordered Yuna and friends to be killed. However he does play a role in the story but the origins strech further back in time. A thousand years to be precise.
At Mt. Gagazet you can here stories of the old elder. He reveals that during the war between Zanarkand and Bevelle, as the Bevelle army crossed Gagazet they heard a strange song, a "song from the otherworld" as they called it. The song scared the army away.
The ruler of Zanarkand at this time was none other than Yevon. On the night that Sin destroyed Zanarkand he ordered his daughter, Lady Yunalesca, and her husband, Lord Zaon, to flee from Zanarkand.
Yevon's followers, the fayth, were the ones who sung the song at Gagazet that scared away the Bevelle army. Legend has it that Sin was born from this song.
Seeing as Yevon disappeared BEFORE Zanarkand was destroyed.. and that Yunalesca coincidentally fled before the incident.. almost certainly suggests that Yevon became Sin.
Zanarkand had no hope of winning the war against Bevelle, so it seems logical that Yevon became Sin in order to crush Bevelle.
Destroying Zanarkand was all part of Yevon's plan. By doing this there would be vast amounts of Fayth, which Yunalesca needed to create.. the Final Aeon. Also the Bevelle didn't discover the ruins of Zanarkand until a few months afterward. They assumed that Sin was a creature from that 'otherworld'.
The stories at Gagazet also tell that the Hymn of the Fayth was actually the song from the otherworld. Bevelle had orignally banned the song, but it many people sang it in defiance. Bevelle lifted the ban and named the song the "Hymn of tha Fayth", claiming that it soothed the souls of the dead.
Bevelle later founder the Temples of Yevon, and began teaching Yevon's teaching in an effort to crush Yevon's.. no Sin's wrath.
However, the Aeon's, are the souls of Yevon's followers.. the willingly became Fayth on the night Zanarkand was destroyed. Implying that they too became Aeon's to fight ALONGSIDE Sin in an effort to crush Bevelle.
However 1,000 years later. These happenings have faded in the midsts of time. The Aeon's that we see Yuna using are twisted varities of the Dark Aeon's, changed by the hope inside of the summoners.
Maester Mika's followers that he sent to guard the temples were loyal to him, but the were also followers of the original Yevon. Not the Yevon portrayed in Bevelle's warped teachings.
When Mika realized the error in his ways, and saw that Yuna was the only hope to destroy Yevon, he perished from Spira.. no loner willing to be a part of the spiral of death and lies.
However the original Yevon and it's followers served to continue the spiral of death upon Spira. Showing that the followers who summon the Dark Aeon's are followers of the original Yevon. They see Yuna as a threat to their plan, their goal. So they call forth the original Aeon's, created by Yevon's original followers, the Dark Aeons, to stop Yuna in her path.
The summoning of Dark Bahamut can also be theorized. It was Yunalesca who summoned it. Note the way that you cannot walk onto the symbol of Yevon after you defeated her. This is because this is where Dark Bahamut will emerge.
Yunalesca's role in this is that she starts the Final Aeon cycle. The Final Aeon, as we know will not totally defeat Sin. In away it gives Yevon more power. Yunalesca continues the spiral of death by making someone the fayth of the final Aeon. Yunalesca pretends to destroy Sin, in order to gain her father's glory. But she is really just another puppeteer of Yevon.
The name Yu Yevon was made by Bevelle. Yevon was to act as a sign of hope for the people, Yu Yevon was kept underwraps. But as you progress through FFX you find that the Bevelle Yevon does not exist.. and that Yu Yevon is the real Yevon.
I hope this theory makes sense to you. Feel free to post it elsewhere or on your sites, as long as your credit me for it.
I will expand on this theory as I research some more in the game. |

| Yea there might be some loopholes as this my first big theory I've made for an FF game. I'll try and find a script for the story-teller elder to back it up. But if you don't believe me just go the entrance of Mt Gagazet and talk to him (you must have the airship) |

| Ah that explains why the aeons that yevon posses at the end of the game look like the dark aeons. And because they are the original aeons they have the true power of aeons |

| Thats a lot to take in, but seems to make a lot of sense also. |
