alright so i'm down to the end of the game, having pretty much conquered it @ lv60ish learning 1 esper total and 0 quickenings. i have by no means uncovered all the secrets, done all of the hunts, or gotten any of the ultimate weapons. but i think that's enough to write a little bit about what i think of the game. beware, a lot of the following is random and i didn't put it together very coherently.
storywise it's pretty political. i wasn't that interested in the whole war business. should've given more story to the espers and the zodiac stones, like in final fantasy tactics. that was far more interesting.
is it just me or is quitting the judge position and becoming a sky pirate a common thing rofl.
penelo has like almost no character development. but i really dig her voice actress, and she's fairly cute. she's also left out of most of the story.
fran is the ultimate mist detector. i can't remember her saying much other than "the mist is thick here." and although she's sexy and all that, she's not really that fun to be around.
ashe's "to venge or not" thing is so overplayed and drawn out. i thought she was going to be a cool character, but it turns out i totally hate her personality. plus she's boring. her voice actress sounds a bit too old for the part.
vaan - i totally hate his face and hair and clothes. could they make a main hero any more annoying to look at? a lot of people have commented that he's not really a part of the story and i have to agree. his presence doesn't really make an impact on anything. the story could have gone with or without him. he does pull a few funny lines though.
balthier - what can i say, he's the leading man. although i could find no reason for balthier to tag along the party for as long as he did (in the beginning anyway), i'm glad he stuck around. his lines are a lot more natural and entertaining, and he's actually a part of the story somewhat.
basch - he's alright. dresses kinda raggy.
they could have listed more of the equipment attributes in the shops.
aside from disliking half the characters, the gameplay has generally been pretty fun. the maps are large, detailed, and beautiful to look at or explore. the moogles are once again very cute.
and i can't believe that i didn't manage to find any of the espers that you don't get from the regular storyline.
the main villain is such a pussy. dr cid would've made a better one.
Moogles and chocobos are ingratiatingly cute. (I wub them!)
Um... Dr Cid really is the main villain, yeah there's another guy, but it's Cid. Actually, my main disapoinment is that you never get Al Cid as a guest. That would have been cool, even though he's a total wanker.
I don't know what you didn't like about the story. For once it's about the people, not about the planet, the world, and for once there's motivation of the characters that's more complicated than zomg your hawt but I'm so broody and awkward around girls.

I agree, and I like it. I see alot of people *****ing that X is still the best. But if you really site back with an open mind, XII is the best at this time. Bigger enviros, more things to do, and it keeps you wanting to know more. And the characters arn't annoying as hell to the point of wanting to kill then or de-cap them aswell.
no one's talking about which game is better here, this is about how this game stands up by itself. I like the game as a whole, but...
i find the characters thrown together without an engaging story behind them. for example, penelo and vaan are the first characters you get. penelo seems like a great character but has about an interesting of a past as the girl next door, and basically no part in the story at all. fran's entire story is summed up in a single cutscene. vaan is only around because he had nothing better to do at bujherba. he wasn't even interested in avenging his brother. the characters that are really involved with the story are balthier, ashe, and basch. and ashe didn't really come off all that interesting. she has some of the most retarded lines. i give her credit for looking cool and dressing well though.
ps - al cid is now one of my fav chars. tell me you did not laugh when he put on his shades
I enjoyed it... far more than I've enjoyed some of Square's most recent efforts on the FF front, to be honest.
Yes, the story was very political... and I think that they perhaps sacrificed a little too much character development and backstory in order to keep explaining what in the hell was going on and why... but on the whole, I found it engaging and a nice change of pace from the usual FF plot lines.
And I can definitely say that I didn't miss the random enemy encounters a whole lot. The Gambit system was a little much (though occasionally useful, I felt like I was getting lazy relying on it so much), but I did like the License Board.
