Ok, everyone give your primary offensive caster this ability and then unlock all your black magic. You don't have to have bought the spell to cast them if you do it through the shades of black ability! I just cast scathe and I don't even have the spell, I only have it unlocked. Damn I wish I had figured this out sooner.

Is that a technik? And if so, where do I buy it!

Oh, wait you do have to buy the tech don't you. Hmm, and that comes a bit later in the game than it sounds like many of you have reached. It's at the imperial capital that you buy it.
At any rate, now that I have it, I have it set up so that I use 4 gambits to cast it if there is a unit in range vulnerable to fire, ice, lightning or wind. I figure, 1 of the four and I have a very good chance of doing damage, and if none of that works, I just switch the black mage for a different character.
I don't find it useful at all. It's been way too random for me to use in the battles that are difficult for me to need it, and in the others I hardly use magic at all because I made sure that all of my characters have a pretty decent physical attack. I've used it a total of 9 times, 3 times it's healed an enemy, 5 times it did average damage that could have been done with attacking normally which would have been faster, and only once did I hit a weakness. Not really that valuable, especially since MP really isn't a problem in this game, especially when you unlock Quickenings, something that I suggest to be done as early as you can manage because of the huge MP boost (MP is increased 3x your current total once all three are unlocked).
It's really not a very reliable move strategy wise.
After having gotten it, I have to agree... it's really not all that great. Yeah, every once in awhile it'll cast Scourge or Flare or something decent, but more often than not I seem to cast Fire or Blizzard... which are all but useless at this point in the game.
For that matter, are ANY of the technicks actually useful? About the only one I use is Libra, and that's mostly just in the areas that are littered with traps.
Most of them aren't, really. The only technick that I found useful other than Libra was, at times, Achilles when I needed to add a little more weakness to something.
I suppose it's to be expected, though. They all cost nothing to use.
I found Poach to be very useful for making money. If it works you automatically get an item. No matter what. And it's even better at long range. (like with Balthier's guns)
