I always keep my weapons! I never sell weapon unless I have duplicates! Meh! And besides - where ya gonna buy a buster sword from once you've sold it?!

probably because it means a lot to them, like cloud for example, I don't think he could face selling zack's buster sword....

The original weapons, IMO, are signature weapons of the characters. These weapons, particularly those of Cloud's and Barret's, are important to them in some way.
