I think it would be a good idea to compile a list of sites for music information. So here goes nothing.

General:
Allmusic.com: Extensive database of recorded music listings, with reviews. For general rock and indie they’re quite good (although they have a rather conservative phobia of not assigning a full five-star rating to anything released recently), but for metal you can find better elsewhere.
Wikipedia: There’s a lot more to Wikipedia than just music, but you can usually find neutral information about major musicians here (although you may need to add “(band)” or “(musician)” after the terms you’re searching for to find it).

Metal:
BNRMetal: Fairly comprehensive index of metal bands, focusing mainly on European metal, with commentary I usually find to be spot-on. I discovered a lot of my current favourite artists through this site, and that’s saying something.
Encyclopedia Metallum: Probably the most comprehensive index of metal bands I’m aware of. The user-submitted reviews I find to be quite hit-or-miss; there seems to be a rather large contingent of “kvlt kiddies,” and we all know how closed-minded kvlt kiddies can be.

Indie:
Pitchfork Media: I personally hate Pitchfork, but not listing them in anything purporting to be a music links list would be kind of counterintuitive.

Classical:
Allclassical.com: Spinoff of Allmusic.com. Pretty self-explanatory.

Feel free to contribute more links.

to this thread.

All Music Taste's
http://www.pandora.com: Basically you type in an artist or song that you like and Pandora finds everything similar and plays it to you (and sometimes the song and artist you typed in). It’s a really good way to discover new music similar to what you like already.
I recommend it 100%, it has just about any artist you can think of and It’s free, so check it out!

Hip-Hop
http://www.allhiphop.com
http://www.hiphopgame.com
I don't know if anyone likes hip-hop around here but these sites have all the latest news and promotional tracks from rap & hip-hop artists. There’s also video, album reviews, artist interviews (got some pretty big artists & producers in there), funny pics & rumours ect..

I'd like to recommend www.last.fm. It's a great community site. The crux of the site is its music player plugin, which records what songs you listen to, then creates your profile based off your listening habits. You can see my profile at www.last.fm/user/moggraider for an example. Plugins are available for most media players. I use the Winamp plugin, and it is completely unintrusive.

In addition to the profile, you'll get artist recommendations based on what you listen to, a list of "neighbors" who have listening habits similar to yours, a message board, friends list, streaming radio, and artist wikis. It's also cool being the top fan of a band once you've listened to it enough, and the top fans are judged by amount of listening in the past week, so you'll always have a shot at it.

Hmm... last.fm would be a lot better if the crap would update correctly - it's been screwed up pretty bad for the past month.

My top artists have been frozen in place since late April.

Gotta second what Moo said. Although I should’ve listed it anyway.

They’ve said the problem is “about to be fixed” for more or less the last month, so I’m getting more and more skeptical. I guess it’s still good for the weekly charts, though.

My top artists have been updating OK. Didn't you guys get free premium accounts for your trouble? Despite the occasional db problems, Last.Fm is still worthy of registering for.

My charts last updated Tuesday, June 6. And are nowhere near complete - for example, there’re about 200 plays of Mayhem that have yet to go through.

Interesting but biased Electronic Music guide, worth mentioning. However, Wikipedia.org and AllMusic will always be the two best guides for musical knowledge.
