In this little exercise we list the set of musicians which, when working together, we think would make the most appealing music for whatever set of reasons. Therefore, you can mix and match your favourite musicians from different groups to come up with your ideal "supergroup."
Purely an intellectual exercise, of course, but I'm just curious to see how people will respond.
As to my response, I'm honestly not too particular as to who plays guitar. Talented guitarists are, to be quite honest, a dime a dozen. But for individual style, right now, I'd have to say I'm quite in love with that produced by Blasphemer, the most recent guitarist of Mayhem, for the lead. As for backups - because a band this heavy needs at least three guitarists - I'd go with Rand Burkey of Atheist (since Kelly Schaefer is currently afflicted with tendonitis) and Paul Masvidal of Cynic.
I'm torn on who should play bass. The purist in me says Les Claypool should play it, but I think Tony Choy would be better suited to this form of music (although that's only because Roger Patterson and Cliff Burton are, tragically, both dead).
Drums would be a dual-duty affair, handled simultaneously by Brann Dailor of Mastodon and Hellhammer of so many bands that if I need to mention any, you need to brush up on your metal history.
Vocals would be handled alternately by Garm (Ulver, Borknagar, Arcturus, etc.), ICS Vortex (Dimmu Borgir, Borknagar, Arcturus, etc.), Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth, Katatonia, Bloodbath, etc.) and Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, etc.), Vibeke Stene (Tristania) and Tarja Turunen (Nightwish), and in tandem by any or all six of them. When necessary, all forms of vocal processing and filtering would be applied to create bizarre neopsychedelic effects during instrumental interludes (of which there would be plenty).
Meter signatures of songs would be determined by throwing dice, à la Dillinger Escape Plan. Songs would be no shorter than ten minutes apiece, each consisting of no less than three separate movements, which would segue chaotically in the fashion of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless or any of the Beatles' psychedelic work. Album would be a two-hour, double-disc concept piece chronicling the progressive decay and eventual chaotic upheaval of a postindustrial society after the disappearance of a substance crucial to the functioning of its economy. Ranting about the uselessness of the politicians of this particular society and ironic comments about the unprecedented levels of angst found in the many Linkin Park fans who live in it would also be appreciated.
Let's hear your own thoughts. I'm completely open to the idea of using dead people or people who are no longer able to play music, but as you can see I've managed quite fine using only people who are still in the business. |

Reason: I didn't finish writing the first paragraph. Fixxxed now. Also added a couple of female vocalists for good measure.

I'm going to start with the easiest part. Vocals. For this I would pick Simone Simons of Epica. her voice is spectatular, she has a warm sound, and brings a quality to the music that is hard to discribe. If you have not heard of Epica, hang your head in shame and go here.
For guitars, Emppu Vuorinen of Nightwish and and Matt Heafy of Trivium (also Matt could do Backup vocals, naturally). These two are diverse in their ways, and I think if put in the same band they could stand to learn a bit from each other, and therefore be even more awesome than they already are.
Bass....I think Gareth Davies of Funeral for a Friend. I need give no reason here, because he simply kicks phenominal amounts of the arse.
Drums. So many good drummers out there...As long as they aren't like Meg White, I'd be happy. Jerome Simons of Epica'd be high on my list....
btw, Nice combination of Vibeke and Tarja... That'd actually be a pretty nice mix, as they're voices are fairly simular in a lot of ways. |

| I can't really speak for instrumentalists, but if Dani Filth (Dusk and her Embrace/Cruelt and the Beast era), Mikael Akerfeldt and Amy Lee (numetal, I know, but that doesn't make her voice less appealing) were all vocalists, I'd buy it. |

| Are you kidding me? Dani Filth is pretty much the most horrible vocalist in metal, imo. quack quack quaaack. The best thing about Mikael Akerfeldts vocals is that he can change pretty good from grunt to clean, which both are good but imo, especially his grunt, not too special. Amy Lee has a really good voice, though. |

| Dani Filth can be okay, but he can be goddamn awful a lot of the time. |
