Default  Do you watch anime dubbed or captioned?

Here's a bit of background first:

Some of the anime I've watched are dubbed in a specific language, as a means of further understanding the story. This usually is the case, because I live in the Philippines. Since there are a lot of anime fans in my country, most of them aged 7-12, who are having literacy problems, some anime shows like DBZ, have been dubbed in my native language for them to understand. Also, some of the names of the characters have been changed, don't know why.

Dubbing is quite difficult, because the dialogue has to be translated from the original to the native version. This applies because of intellectual property issues (e.g. if the anime will be shown in Malaysia, it should be in Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese if aired in mainland China or Taiwan, etc.) But still, it truly depends on the company, because it will decide on whether the show be dubbed in the native or in English.

The disadvantage of dubbing is that some irrelevant details are being injected into the dialogue (an example of this is an episode of Fushigi Yuugi I've seen. Some terms that were infused in the lines were "University of the Philippines" (state university), "Manny Pacquiao" (local boxer), etc.) This really LMAO, and I was wondering why these were part of the dubbing, when in the original dialogues they aren't. But personally, they do add a bit of cultural relevance, as it helps us appreciate the show.

As for captioned, I prefer watching anime shows this way, because it truly sticks to the original dialogue. It also prevents the dialogues from being misinterpreted of some sort.

So to ask, do you prefer watching anime dubbed, or captioned, and why?

i have a split view

i think dubbed can sometimes be kool, but some anime's it just doesn't suit. like i think dbz isn't the same without it dubbed, but things like trigun are just better subbed (i can't image it with american va's).

A sub is usually preferable, because amircan voice acting is usually absolutely horrible...or if you're fluent in japanese, but usually because the voice translation sucks and the acting sucks. It's much better the read a closer version of what they really say.

For instance, I was once watching a movie, orignally in japanese (discluding title for embarrasing reasons ) where the sub was totally different from the dub....for some reason we were watching both at the same time...and the voice acting SUCKED...

I much prefer subs, dubs are usually badly done, with voices that are so squeaky they are annoying, like ayeka from tenchi muyo for example

there are a few dubs that are exceptions, such as evangelion, that was pretty well dubbed, apart from asuka's voice, that is
