A Veteran's Request
December 21, 2002
'Ere I stand
With six months in hand
My reputation on the line-
But I don't mind.
I feel this should be done
Though I speak for one,
Myself, many more may agree-
But the ignorant will not see.
Well... here it is. My 1000th post, and it just may be my very last. Don't be too quick to flame and accuse, though it is the normal impulse, restrain yourself. Read everything I say, understand where I'm coming from. And if you still feel you must flame me, then go right ahead.
I first joined FFR on the last day of June. A friend of mine referred me, and this was about 6 months after quitting FFO. I was at first hesitant to join, but I gave it a shot. It may have been one of the best decisions I made all summer. The people were warm, friendly, and you could hold a great conversation with everyone. Even though I was still new, the members here gave me respect. This kind of atmosphere kept me coming back to FFR.
But now, the atmosphere has changed. FFR has become extremely popular, it seems as though one person joins every 10 seconds. Though new memebers are joining every day, it seems as though the quality of the forum has gone. I remember being excited about browsing my favorite boards, looking for threads I could post in. Now, the boards have become dull, repetitive, and nothing good comes of them, only people getting upset over "The Cloud vs. Squall Debate" and other threads similar to that. RP was at first, a great idea, but it has only made the community of FFR greedy. I know members who don't even have a single post, asking me for 1000 RP. Whatever happened to the concept, you have to EARN your RP? Well, some newbies don't think that that applies to them. And newbies may be the reason why FFR is not the way it used to be.
While browsing several threads, I have seen respected veterans correct a newbie's statement or argument. Instead of being appreciatve, the newbies feel threatened, and begin to flame. This goes on every day. And if you didn't know, as a result of this, people get upset. And people begin to leave, including staff members.
Ah, whatever happened to the quality of posting? It seems as though that concept as well has become unimportant. The only thing important now is quantity. And if you don't believe me, look at the post count of members. Sure, over 1000 posts looks nice on your record, but what if 3 quarters of them are, "yea man, i know" and other fragments of sentences that don't even pertain to the thread's topics? And worse, most of them are flames. I have seen friends grow hatred between them because of a newbie's stupid remark.
And what about the Battle System? It is truly wonderful, don't get me wrong on that. But with the release of the BS, the forum activity dies. People don't join anymore to post, they join to get RP, and battle. It should be a privilege to play on the BS. If I could make a simple suggestion, I would set a post count you must attain before being allowed to play. But then again, this would only increase the spam on the boards.
Back to the part about the members. I must mention the vets. They know this board better than anyone else. But yet, they are treated with very little or no respect. Why is this? More and more veterans are leaving, and without veterans, what's left? Not much to be proud of, anyway...
I can't forget about the staff. They have done great jobs, but some people are dissatisfied with the selection of the staff, and I can't blame them. I know a few members who have been here since March or April, are very respected, but some n00b with over 1000 spam posts has a better chance of becoming part of the staff. And you wonder why the vets are getting upset?
Oh, let me mention the topic of banning. Often, members are banned for doing things unappropriate, which is understandable. But other times, some members are banned for just posting their opinion, or, just speaking the truth. Whatever happened to the right, "Freedom of Speech"? Nowhere in the rules does it say anything about speaking your mind. And if you wish to ban me for speaking my mind, and stating some of the obvious truths, go right ahead. There's not much left for me here at FFR anymore.
I tried making suggestions, and they were often discarded. Probably the biggest one I made was this: Put a quota on the number of members to join each month. Instead of appreciating my thoughts and concern, I was flamed for my suggestion. Heh, that's the thanks I get.
For the members that will read this, I know what you will do. You may think, "Gosh he's right, but I can't say anything... I don't want to get banned." That's fine. But if you want to agree with me and say something, go ahead. And if FFR bans you, then that's FFR's problem, not yours.
Well, that about wraps it up. I will base my decision on staying or not on what FFR does after reading this. It's been a real great time, I made some great friends, and I'll be sure to keep in touch. Thanks a lot to those who made it memorable, I'll be sure to mention you guys in my sig, should I depart.

| Very well put. In no way, do I disagree. I've been wanting to say this for months, but I've been too lazy. Nicely put, I feel the same way. I can't add or remove everything. I agree fully. |

I have to agree on most of the things that you have said.
On the staff topic, i have been considered for modship many times and a few times i was very close. But i was nominated by the vet staff members but all the new staff m,embers didn't want me on the staff becuase i wasn't "popular" enough. Well thats bull to me.
All these topics lately sicken me and i hate most of the convos here.
I try to stay here becuase it was my first place i felt like family on the internet. I have some firnds here but i am very unknown becuase of all the newbs invading this forum each day.
I have also been considering about leaving this place but i have decided to stay for now.
Maybe we can bring back 1/4 of the greatness these forums had back then. |

well you make some very good understandable points, but im (apparently) a newbie myself, maybe im in the minority here but i really dont care about the battle system or the fake money, i come here to just post my opinions and have debates, sure ive flamed people, i think some people deserve a flaming when they post something that is thick.
i mean i can see why you're pissed off but surely the wankers like that are in the minority, who cares about how much they post or how much rp they have? dont do them any good really does it? i only post when i feel i can contribute or say something at elast worth the 5 seconds it takes to read it or when something has really pissed me off, ive seen a few other members who are fairly new and they have contributed greatly to some of the debates in the balamb gardens, of course i have also seen some that i can't even refer to as human, they are pollutants on this forum, but they'll get themselves banned before too long if they dont stop acting like total ****s.

get the bad wrap....
I've seen this all to offten on other fourms...
thats the reason I came here.. coz it was a dicent fourm...
but not any more.. the good ol' days are gone..
I think EVERY ONE should speak there minds..
and I hope I'm not the one who made you leave...
I respect you CNC and hope that you stay..
if not, then I shall never let you memory die..
for WE, the VETS of FFR shall remember you always.... |

CNC there's been so many times when ya shared ya thought with just a few about all this, mosting in the chat. I think becuase of that not many people paid attention to it, but when it's here for all to see, it stands out. as a vet mahself there is a lot of things ya stated that i have questioned one time or another. You took the thoughs and put them out in words, in a thread. Something that i probably would never consider. And i know that ya have thought about what might be said because of it yet ya still posted it. for this i commend you.
the one thing that caught me was the point of how ya view of ffr changed over the time here. from joyful, and new to just....well dull. I know how ya feel because that is one of the many reasons i left so many times. but each time i come back i hope that this will change. another thing is the fact that many people, not just newb BEG for rp. i myself have recieve many pm's asking for a loan, and i can't find it like myself to just give away something that worked mah ass of for. *sighs*
thanx for speakin the thoughts that i habored for so long

Although I agree with much of what you say, I beg you not to decrease the amount of fun that we DO have here. If you leave, you only give into the nOObs that bother you so much. The number of veterans is slowly decreasing because people are caving into the large number of low quality posts. Instead, stay on as long as you can and I, for one, will work as hard as I can to at least make a dent in the recent problems. In fact, just recently I was looking at the number of posts per day at FFR since September. It has rocketed from a mere 450 to over 1000 posts DAILY! And I must agree that many of them are spammish or flaming. But give it time and those members will either disappear or the staff will get rid of them once they make their mistakes. And maybe a few will slip through the cracks, but are you seriously going to let that get to you?
As far as a quota goes, I'm extremely shocked that you were flamed. That idea never occurred to me and now that I think about it, with a little bit of figuring out somethings, that might be a beneficial system. The idea of closing registration has been brought up but that does seem a bit drastic to me. For instance, many contributive members have popped up, including Lennon Legend, Dweeb (INAH), Quistis and such. Once the moronic members are weeded out, we may just get that community back that you miss so much. But it takes some time.
Also, as far as the battle system goes, I have an idea on that which I will PM you about.
And finally, your attack against the not-so-new-anymore staff members is the only thing I disagree on. I can't name a single person who was modded that had any spammish posts whatsoever. And whether it be a good thing or not, I think only one person had over 1000 posts. And the point is, post count, as you said, shouldn't be such a factor in whether somebody is or is not a productive member or staffy. We were picked because the other staff members figured we would do a good job. And for the most part, we have.
In conclusion, I hope you won't disregard what I've said solely on the basis of how long I've been here. FFR has changed ALOT, even since September, but please don't just abandon hope on it. Give everybody a chance and eventually things will work themselves out. |

Ya lucky bastard, you get out while youre ahead of me, Ill be at 1000 soon enough....;-)
Id have been a staff member, or so I think, if I kissed ass...But as you said, I speak my mind and dont give a **** to what others think of me....
As for he BS, the more you 'fix' it, the less people anticipate it...I first came here, and the BS was great..Now its just borng cause it comes out for maybe 3 weeks, and its gone.......for a month or 2.....
