Edit:..Well, Ethereal said these are the rules now, so there you go, be sure to read through this stuff carefully and try to follow the guidelines and rules...I'll probably write this up in a clearer way sometime and stuff...
RPB Posting Tips and Rules
Ok, I'm going to attempt to give some basic guidelines on what to do to make good RPB posts, a lot of it you probably already know, but this should just give you all the tips you need in one handy document.
Basic Posting Tips
Always try to include the 5 senses in your posts, what can your character see, hear, smell, taste and feel? Detail those things, especially the sights, sounds and feelings, as these are the ones that are important, you need to document the sights well so that people can get an idea of what's actually going on from your character's point of view, detailing the noises isn't that important unless your describing a spell or something but it is nice to add that detail in there, and its important to describe feelings such as the pain inflicted on your character by an enemy attack or the cramp in the straining muscles of your character as they attempt a particularly difficult attack.
Try your best to use good punctuation and spelling, use a spell checker if you must, it just needs to be clear what's going on, also, try not to use the same word repeatedly, e.g.
Quote:
|
bob slashed at Jim, he was going to slash his face off because Jim had slashed his arm so now it was time for a payback slash, so bob slashed
|
Ok that's an exaggerated example, but you get the idea, repeating a single word gets annoying after awhile..
Oh and another thing, try to be as original as possible, that means try to think up your own names for characters, weapons and attacks etc....after all that's what RPBing is about right, writing up your own battle with your own character, so why spoil that by pilferring stuff from an FF game or something?...
Intro Posts
Setting the scene, as with books, is always very important as it establishes the mood and atmosphere for the rest of the battle. In your later posts you'll be too busy describing your actions to go into any detail about the environment, so make sure to get the crucial details in your first post, as a lot of the time you can use the surrounding environment to your advantage in the battle and it isn't very convincing to just invent a large building or tree halfway through the battle, so be sure to get all major details down in the intro post.
As well as the major details it always adds a touch of class if you go a little further, so go into a little more detail, so if you mention that there’s a water fountain nearby then mention the sound of running water, describe what the fountain looks like, the material it's made of etc, all this detail just adds to the feel of it all and if your RPB is judged then it's sure to be a contributing factor to deciding the winner, so be sure to add a fair amount of detail.
In the intro you should try and explain how your character got to where he/she is, what they're up to and what their goals are, make sure to add some of their thoughts into the post to show what is going through their mind at the time...and it can be a nice touch to mention previous battles, e.g.,
Quote:
An example
I'm not so sure I should be here in Mavelli, the last time I was here things didn't go too well,
Thought Simon as he looked over at the deep scar on his arm, a distant memory of searing pain in his mind, ..some wounds never heal properly...
|
You know, something along those lines, it doesn't have to be anything to detailed but mentioning previous (recent) battles in some way just adds some extra depth to your character..
Battle Posts
Make sure to start each post where your last one left off, so say in post one you said "And his sword sailed down through the air, tracing out a red arc of energy in its wake as the sharp gilded blade bore down towards Bob's head.."
and then the other guy posted something like "Bob deftly raised his sword to parry the blow, but Jim's attack was so forceful, enhanced by his magic, that Bob was sent backwards, down to the floor. He lay sprawled out, his shirt had ripped around his elbows when he landed and he had been grazed along his arms, his head had also smashed into a rock and his head swam, he may have got a concussion. But Bob kept going on anyway, determined to pulverise Jim, so he rolled backwards, as his body came up from his backwards roll he thrust his sword up, hoping to plant his sword between Jim's legs, an attack to the family jewels may be out of order but he's asking for it..."
Then on your next post instead of immediately jumping to the attack against you, first of all you should describe how your attack ended from your point of view, how you observed what the opponent did, what you were doing and thinking as you saw this, and be sure to respond to any dialogue the opponent may have spoken...
Now when defending and attacking it isn't enough to say "I blocked it with my sword cos I roxorz" ....you need to detail it all, as I've already said you need to mention your character's thoughts, what exactly are you planning to do, then when you make your attack/defence you need to make sure you use a fair amount of descriptive writing, so mention,
*Thoughts and feelings
*The opponent, how they look to you, what their attack may look like
*what's your attack going to do? If your going to hit a guy with a sword where are you trying to hit? how are you swinging the sword? Are you finding the move hard to pull off?
That kind of thing...
People tend to be rather vague with their attacks and defence, they just say they blocked or attacked without saying how, and when they use "magic" it's even worse, they just say "HE USED FIRE3!!!! DIE!!" or some **** like that, it's pathetic, you have to detail it, so you should say something like,
"He poured every bit of mystical energy into the air around him, chanting the sacred words from the texts of the pendragon scrolls to help him concentrate on this incredible feat of magic...before him flames suddenly began to burst into existence, the bright yellow and white flames danced around before him..until finally he gestured his hand forwards and all the flames roared towards his opponent in unison, converging on his foe, covering him, before releasing a tremendous explosion..he had to shield his eyes as the massive ball of flames lashed out from the explosion, and as the the cloud of ash and smoke rose up to fill the room, choking him..."
..some **** like that..
kill Posts
So when the battle's over and you want to make a kill post you should still adhere to the guidelines stated here...but it's a lot easier as you get to decide exactly what happens to both you and your opponent..but it is still important to keep it convincing and in character, if in the rest of the battle the other guy has been giving you a tough time and causing you a lot of damage then it isn't very convincing to say, "and he overwhelmed Jesus with his strength and cut his head off, the end" try and make it fit the rest of the battle....
Keep in mind that you can only kill someone if they allow you, otherwise it's God Moding, usually you'll just RPB until one of you submits to an attack and lets it kill you for the sake of realism, but some people play by a different set of rules, like 3 posts each then each makes a kill post, after the battle is judged the best RPer's choice of events goes ahead, in those cases keep the paragraph above in consideration.
Truce Posts
Some people choose to end their battles without a kill, by going into a discussion with their opponent and then the battle will end with an uneasy truce or a friendship being formed, personally I think those are in general pretty ****ty endings..I mean you've been trying to kill a guy and then you're suddenly friends...doesn't make much sense to me anyway...but a fair few people like to use that as their ending, so I'd advise that you think about it carefully, I mean is your character likely to befriend their opposition, eg is a Holy Knight going to suddenly say "lets be friends" to an evil Dark Knight?..a truce can only work in some situations otherwise it just looks ****ing stupid....and you have to think to yourself "is the opponent likely to accept a truce?"...meh
Important - Things NOT To Do...
God Modding
This is where you decide your opponents actions, that is one of the worst things you can do in an RPB, your character is your own, it's all well and good for YOU to decide what THEY say, feel, and do...but to directly control the other person's character just isn't on, allow them to decide how they will react to your attack and what they want to say....
So you can only mention and describe things about the other character IF your opponent has mentioned them previously, otherwise you're taking the piss, works both ways too, if you find someone god modding against you then ask them to change their post, if they won't then just ignore them, they're ****ty rpers...you could also maybe ask a mod to help if you feel like it...
in short..No God Moding!
Multiple Attacks
You're only really meant to pull off one action in each post, well two if you include your response to the previous attack by your opponent...but you're only meant to send off one attack back otherwise it gives them way too much to respond to in their next post...it IS acceptable to do one main attack with a weak secondary attack to back it up, but make sure that the opponent knows that the secondary attack isn't meant to cause that much damage..... |
