I've been thinking about perception -vs- reality after we studied perception in my Theory of Knowledge class and a debate with my computer teacher last year. It had to do with our perception of something and the reality of it and what really is happening to our surroundings.
Say you're looking at an object, any object will do. Now, say you're looking at a box. Okay, it's a plain cardboard corrugated (sp?) box. Nothing fancy, nothing new. Okay, now turn away and look at something else. What do you think the box looks like? What state is it in? Is it still there?
Of course, common sense and logic will tell you that the box is stil there, in it's original state, and it has not changed or moved in any way. However, we were talking about a theory that someone came up with some time ago- that things that we are not directly observing in reality is not really in it's proper state. In other words, we really don't know what's happening to it. The theory goes to say that when we're looking or perceiving something directly, it is different than when we are not looking at it.
Of course, this theory cannot really be ever tested, since we cannot observe something that is supposed to be unobserved. However it is an interesting theory.
Reality is a word created by man to describe anything that can be observed by the senses. When you question the definition of reality, you question a word that has a concrete definition. The meanings of words should not be bent and skewed for the sake of theory. Comparing reality to dreams and perceptions is the same as hallucinations, all in the imagination. Objects do not move or change when you are looking away, if you want to test this, have another person or a camera focus on the object in your absence of view. It has always been my belief that we live in a 3+ dimensional world that can only be changed by logical energy exerted by people or other forces. Not some psuedo perceptional universe where the only things that exist are what you see. The phrase "If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?" comes to mind. Yes, physics and vibrations exist without humanity present. Believe it or not, man is not the center of the universe, and neither is our mind.
Egh, I think that theory you spoke of OWA is a bit silly and stupid in concept. You don't need to think that much over a damn box, it's a box afterall =P. It's not going to turn into a giant five story mecha, or a bar of pure gold. It will be on the table, just as you left it..
..Gah, fricken' physiscists.. always trying to confuse things with crazy theorys.
I would just like to go on record by saying.... Huh? Everything you just said confused the living **** outa me. I am super-tired and I shouldn't be reading such things when I'm tired. Maybe when I wake up, I'll understand.
reality?!?!? Is that where the pizza delevary guy comes from????
J/k
Reality depends on each person's point of view. What I think is reality, will be differant to what the next person sees as reality. In a way there may not be a real "reality" because everyone sees it in their own way....
