Default  Does videogames breed violence..?

IN England its beginning to rear its ugly head....Violence is happening due to videogames.....Im America weve heard of the Columbine massacre and in germany this year there was also incidents...But it is always put down to videogames and people sueing videogame companies for their losses...of course we symphasise with the losses people have but to lash out at the video game industry seems unjustified...

Music and film is also blamed for the spiralling shootings at school...with people such as Marilyn Manson and movies such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre inspiring people to commit these horrific acts.

What are peoples thoughts on this sensitive subject...?

Blitzballer ur completely right, I live in Scotland and when some teenagers (or any child) starts to fight it is totally blamed on computer games where it be games like Tekken or even Smackdown games. This is totally wrong and is completely off the mark, videogames are clearly age rated and it is a proven fact that computer games can improve a persons hand/eye co-ordination and their ability to cope or to solve a problem. It`s the society which we live in is to blame and the child`s role models as well as their parents NOT computer games and television.

Absolutely, games influence us all. However, games are not the -only- reason why people are driven to do things- other factors do go in. Movies and musicians also drive people. I would have to agree that the gaming industry does drive violence, but it's not the -only- driving point.

BTW shouldn't this be in the Gaming forum?

Agreed, but video games and other such things are making it more prominent, there will still be murders and all but it would be less if games weren't around... unfortunately, that's the truth.

actually video games are not the cause of violence, and nobody can proove if there would be more, or less murders if there wasnt video games. But I do think that video games today are extremley violent. GTA3, Max Payne, etc.

No i dont think it belongs in the generel gamign place..this is a philosophical debate that impacts upon peoples lives ..

Its a kop out that games such as gta or state of emergency inspire people to do bad things...it is the twisted minds that people have that thinks that they should do the stuff they do....I cant imagine people on this forum planning to do these things..Granted there may be too much blood and violence shown in games.....Its virtual reality....Games are escapism for the likes of you and me, but to the socially isolated and weirdos out there ..a deeper meaning lies.....
I can distinguish between what is real and what is not....Games can relax us at the end of a hard day at uni school or work ...I get so angry when people blame violence in video games or other entertainment as the root of all evil

Well, I think it's pure idiocy to say that video games breed violence. It's typhical for humans to find something to blame on instead of practising self-insight.

A video game might trigger a violent act, but the person in question needs to be pretty labile to begin with for that to happen. It is my oppinion that a secure child brought up in an invironment that teaches love and respect for others can play violent games for all he/she wants without resorting to serious physical violence just beacause of it.

also I think that violent media only reflects a violent society, not causes it.
