I'm pretty sure everyone's heard about public smoking being banned. As in, you can't walk around town with a cigarette, or anywhere on the streets. You can't smoke in a pub or a restaurant... What are your opinions on this?
I personally, as a smoker, think it's pathetic. It may be obvious, but there's logical reasons. I know I like a fag when I'm having a few pints or whatever, and so I'd avoid going to the pub as much, and have a few mates 'round and drink at home where I am not limited to things I can do.
I'm sure the law won't be able to be kept, because I mean people will think "Oh nobody's going to catch me." and have plenty of pulls as quickly as possible.
What about dinner breaks from shops etc when people are working? They like to go to McDonalds or whatever, have a smoke and whatnot. If it's banned, it'll stress out alot of people.
If it's an attempt to rid the population of smokers, then it's not going to work in my opinion. I'd like to hear some of you guys get into this with logical reasons why and why not etc, obviously I'm expecting alot about litter, passive smoking, and own personal risk in agreement to the banning. |

| Its a really stupid idea. I'm kind of a smoker. I've cut out tailors but i like to smoke a fag every now nd then. There are a lot more smokers in areas such as pubs than thre are non-smokers. The government are dooming a lot to pubs to die. If people are offended so much by smoking, they should stay in their own homes instead of trying to force other people to give up their habitual indulgences. How the hell would they like it if we banned **** they enjoy? |

That's a fair point, Marl.
I mean, I thought they'd end up splitting pubs into halves. Smokers and non-smokers etc, but it looks to be an all smoking ban. It'll kill pubs, and in my opinion, it could start a strike from alot of pubs. I mean, if some pubs were all smoking and others were all non-smoking, it'd split friends up on nights out, because not many people who don't smoke would like to go into a bloody smoke area, it'd be worse than those in airports. |

As a non-smoker I do approve of the ban sorry but I can understand where others will have a problem and I don't agree to the limits to where you are and not are allowed to smoke. At my work the workers have to go round the back if they need to smoke and at this time it hasn't a problem despite me thinking it's a lot of hassle to go through that effort for something that simple.
A lot of people at my local pub too don't have too much of a problem going outside for 10 min when they need one and saying that it's done them some good as they are socialising more but the problems will come when summer ends, I can't see anyone being happy with having to go outside when it's pissing down with rain for a smoke. That's when trade will start to be hit severely and this issue could be brought up again. |

| As for that, even in summer we have our very cold nights and our rainy nights being in England and Scotland. I for one wouldn't go outside for a smoke in a pub. I always smoke more when I'm having a drink too for some reason, but it seems to be a habit for a lot of people to smoke more with a drink, weather it be lager or spirits or whatever. |

it's not simply banning something you enjoy, obviously. it is harmful, not just to you but to others. you can't always be in complete isolation when you smoke in public, so others are always at risk
i'm not saying it needs a ban, but it's not as if it's some sort of wild, unfounded idea |

One of my local pubs is already being forced to sell up due to a loss of regular customers because hes been forced to put a smoking ban in place. So many buisness's are going to be ruined just for the sake of some uptight wankers.
Yeah, sure smoking harms passively, but then again so does fumes from car exhausts, but i bet the non-smokers would argue their damn arses off if the government tried to ban cars and driving! |

Personally for me (being a non-smoker) i prefer having smoking banned from public places. Most noticeably when smoking was banned at wheterspoons i enjoyed having lunch without the whiff of smoke around the room.

| See, the entire population won't be satisfied. It's a 50/50 kind of thing here, so the seperate sides of each restaurant, pub whichever would be a good solution, but the government with all these "stop smoking" and cancer adverts which nobody listens to really don't realise this. It's a damn shame. |
