So here's the thing. I really thought that, you know, we had a half decent government going on here. I mean, sure it was a little corrupt in the same way that cats are naturally evil, but at least they were sort of honest about it. Well, fine, not exactly honest as such but... Well... You know, not outright in your face corrupt.
But this new guy...
Harper...
Man...
Ok, With a minority government, which means only with a popular vote of about 30%, and without a vote in parliment he has changed the foreign policy of our army (don't laugh, we bloody have one) from that of peace keeper to occupying force. Seriously. I'm not ****ting.
He runs on a platform of abbolishing the Senate, making government more transparent and such like, fine, clear up so called scandals (Please, we're not even talking about a billion dollars here and they punished the people directly responsible and got most of it back anyway with a little extra for damages)
So of course, one of the first things he does is nominate a senator AND THEN puts him in his cabinet as a minister. Then when the media quite rightly floods him with questions to the tone of 'Hey man, wut the **** is this?' He Turns on them and says they're being anti conservative and refuses to answer questions.
Man, America need a 51st state yet? Right here, if this keeps up, you can have Canada and I'll move to... Australia? That sounds like a cool place... |

| Meh, from what I hear John Howard is just as bad. All governments are corrupt to a certain extent, but from what I've observed, Canada's got years before it gets to be anywhere near as bad as things are here. |

Yeah, they have kangaroos. What have we got? Wolverines. See what I mean?
Man though, if it starts out as Opacity is Transparity, I don't want to hang around until we get to Freedom is Oppression. |

| I would hope so, but I've given up on this sort of thing. I live there, so I should know. If this does turn into another America, I'm moving to Japan. I have no hope that it won't. I just hope Harper isn't as stupid as Bush. |

| See, that's whats frightening. I always thought of that being a lovable idiot was one of Bushes only saving Graces, wereas Harper actually has the air of someone who has thought long and hard about what he's doing, AND THEN goes and tells you that Appointment is Democracy. I just cringe at the idea of what he might try if he ever gets a majority. |

I don't think he will. I'm under the impression that the results of the last elections were just a fluke. But I could be mistaken; after all, I don't get nearly as much news about Canadian politics as people living in Canada do |

Ah, well see because we have a parlimentary system, our PM is just the leader of the party that holds the most seats, but he didn't REALLY win because to pass any bill you still have to win a majority vote in parliment. I think the main reason that he got elected was because the Liberals (Thats basically our fiscal conservative, centerist values Party ironically enough) ran such a flop of a campaign that it was laughable.
What does worry me about Harper however is the number of people who agree with his social policies. This is a man who wants to fix our public health care system by making it private again, someone who wants to take our Very good Peace keeping driven military and turn them into a very bad occupying army and someone who wants to subsidize big buisnesses and give the rich a big tax cut while scrapping the one good idea for a new social program to come along for a while which was the national 5 dollar a day childcare program, and replace it with a 1200 dollar a year tax credit.
This is what I want to know. Say you're a single parent on social security. You want to work but you can't afford to pay for child care if you do because the cheapest available childcare is 50 bucks a day were you live, so instead you stay home and go on the dole. What the hell good is an extra 100 bucks a month going to do for you? It'll give you beer money once a month, that's what. |

| yeah, I'm not fond of his policies at all, but Canada still has a long way to go before it turns into the 51st state. |

He will not get a majority government. Ever. Canada is mostly a liberal country, with the exception of the prairies, he only got a government because no one trusted the liberals, with the liberal party getting a new leader soon, I imagine their popularity will rise again.
People don’t like Harper for what he did regarding the flag and the dead soldiers in Afghanistan. The media doesn’t like him after the stunt he pulled this week.
If there’s another election, the state of the liberal party will determine the outcome, assuming they have a competent leader. |
