Well I searched and I didn't find much substance on it. 10 posts maximum in a 2002 thread so I figured I'd make more of a discussion of it.
----------
What are your views on abortion specifically. When I say that I mean what are your views overall, and in common situations such as....
Rape
Endangerment of the mother's life (complications)
Not wanting or being able to support a child
ect.
When I think of abortion I usually see it in 1 way. You're either all for it or all against it. I don't see how someone can feel it's a cruel and inhumane method of exterminating life when you're against it in the case of a mother simply not wanting the child because it inconviences lifestyle at the prompt time, but feel it's alright if it's endangering the mother's life-- or if the mother was raped and does not want the child.
I am both for and against abortion. I am for it because I feel a mother should have the choice of whether she wants to carry the child or not. I am against it on the fact that I do not want to pay for your **** up in life. Like it or not, big or small we all pay for this in taxes. Those lovely medical taxes drawn from your check go torwards these kind of acts. So in the end as long as it's done in the proper trimester I have no problems with it. As long as I am not paying for it. (But hell we all get shafted anyway. We're all paying.)
But anyhow that's my view. What's yours? |

| I have seen no credible scientific evidence to indicate that a fetus is capable of feeling pain until after five months of pregnancy. Therefore, I think abortion should be completely unrestricted during the first five months of pregnancy. Afterwards I think it should still be allowed in cases of incest, rape and danger to the mother's health as a necessary evil to prevent worse evils. |

In the case of rape, the woman, presumably, was unwillingly forced to have sex and did not want the child to begin with. This is also under the assumption that she had the responsibility to stay away from sex, but was unable to because someone else forced her to. In that case, it wouldn't be fair for her, and most of the time, she probably isn't ready to have a child, both financially and in lifestyle. So an abortion would probably be alright there.
As for other complications, I think the mother should survive and abort because if the baby does but the mother does not, who will raise the child? How will the child be affected by not knowing or having a mother? I guess it could also be up to the mother, if she really is willing and determined to have a child even after the complications, but most of the time, I think she should just listen to what the doctor says about it.
As for free choice, I think that if the woman had the responsibility and knew what she was doing when she had sex (being drunk included, since the responsibility to drink was still her own), then I do not think abortion should be allowed. If the woman is financially secure, has a stable job and can provide for the child, she should not abort. As for everyone else not financially secure or having a stable source of income, either they should abort or keep the baby, but give it up for adoption. I'm a bit undecided on this one because the former may seem cruel for either the baby or the mother (whichever way you see it), but on the other hand, it could be considered their punishment for not being responsible. |

I am generally against it. Looking at the statistics, the vast majority of abortions are performed on young women who couldn't keep off their backs. if you can't keep your legs closed, you should at least protect yourself. and always keep in mind that protection isn't fail-safe.
the only case i can see where abortion would be acceptable, is if carrying a baby to full term would endanger the woman's life.
people who are pro-choice say that abortion is the only option for someone who can't afford to raise a child. what the hell happened to adoption? I know of a family that cannot have children the normal way, and they're looking to adopt a baby from within the country, they've been waiting for nearly 3 years now to get a baby. it's sad that adoptions take place and there are families waiting in line to have children.
i could go on for hours, but this is one thing i definately don't support. |

It's a touchy subject.
I can't contribute anything new to the debate, only that I agree mostly with Channing, and agree wholeheartedly with The Man's post. It reflects everything I believe. A fetus, before five months, is just a fetus. Religious folk will tend to disagree, which is where the big issue behind abortion comes from. According to Christian belief, aborting a baby is no different to killing a human.

So rape isn't a factor then? If I was a woman and some **** raped me, I would by no means have the baby.
Sorry for the double post. |

| no, because again.... there's adoption. always adoption. as a chick, even if i were raped and turned up pregnant from that rape. i would carry that child, and love it all the same. i personally wouldn't choose adoption, but i can see that if a woman couldn't bring herself to look at the child or whatever, adoption is a great thing. |

I think it's interesting to note the large number of anti-choice women who, when they get pregnant, come into abortion clinics and have them. There are some accounts here; I've heard elsewhere that one in four women in America has an abortion at some point in their life. That's a pretty staggering number when you think about it.
A lot of people in the anti-choice movement hold the reasoning that if you don't want to get pregnant, you shouldn't have sex. That reasoning is insulting in modern America for many reasons. I can't be bothered to restate what other people have stated much more eloquently. I'd advise you to look here and here and here.
Forcing a woman to carry the child of her rapist seems nothing less than barbaric to me. It would be a permanent reminder of what was already a traumatic event. |

good points, but my opinion is the same.
as for the woman mentioned in the blog, she was too poor to afford another child, so she opted for abortion. it sounds as though she skipped the adoption consideration. and with the permanent reminder thing, if a woman chooses adoption for her baby, there would be no reminder. in a few months to a year, a woman's body returns to a normal cycle, her oragns shift back into non-pregnant place, and the only telltale sign that she was ever pregnant would be her slightly splayed hips, which eventually will shift back into place. that is considering a woman who watches what she eats, and isn't a royal couch-potato. ^_^ |

The problem with saying "Give it up for adoption" is that during the nine months of pregnancy, a psychological bond develops during mother and child. Being forced to part with a child is such a traumatic experience for many women that they spiral into a deep depression afterwards, simply not being able to function.
On the other hand, a fetus at under five months is a clump of cells not capable of feeling anything. So why exactly is it more important? |
