Attack of the obvious there xD
I was watching TV today, and in the commercial break, there were around 10 advertisments (a bit of an exaggeration, but it's easier to make my point this way) and around 8 of them were for loans, accident lawyers and savings plans (just to be random, the other ones were for toys) and it got me thinking
When did society get so greedy? Nowadays, you can cash in on just about anything. You have a car crash, you can claim off of the insurance, and if you're feeling REALLY greedy, you can even sue the other driver for some totally random injury. The insurance claims are okay, but claiming money for just about any accident you can imagine strikes me as kinda wrong
I swear, there were people claiming for the stupidest things lately. A know a guy who was drunk, and tripped over a hole in the pavement. He has a case against the council now, and is probably going to win it.
He was stupid enough to fall over while drunk, why can't he just accept that it was his own damn fault and just leave it at that?
So, your thoughts? Why is society so greedy? Is it right to claim money for accidents? When did people stop taking responsibility for their actions, and start to get people to fork out lots of money for stupid little accidents? |

Y'know... you've got a great point there. It is all extremelly stupid. It's like shooting yourself in the arm, then sueing the guy who sold you the gun. Pure idiocy, and selfishness.
I think people get cash forked over to them far too easily in this day and age, as you said you can claim money for practically any accident or injury. |

| Why is this bad? I'd do the exact same thing...I'm always in need of money. Money rules the world, that's the fact and that will never change unless we have a nuclear holocaust, wiping out most of the world and then we are set back two thousand years...you can blame it all on technology. |

Society, among its many defects, it's greedy indeed. Although in this case, that's not their fault; it's how the system is set up. If people didn't sue each other over the most trivial things, lawyers will get less work. Everything is the world is money-dependant. That's how our world works. I think that's a clear fact. You don't go buying things and paying with angst, arrogance or love. You pay with money.
Society in this sense is greedy because the majority of the world is living ****ty lives. Money is the only way up. Most people are materialistic or shallow. Materialistic, because their happiness can only be obtained by material possessions; shallow because they don't appreciate things like true love, or affection, things that you can't go and truly buy.
I used to be absolutely materialistic. I thought my happiness was only dependant on objects, but then I met this person, and I found out there are other important things. I know I'm sounding like a cheesy commercial, but I'm not trying to brainwash you, just using my experience as an example. |

| Ha, well it's no **** that society is greedy these days. Lets not forget the number one answer to almost every question: M-O-N-E-Y. Almost all of todays society is highly based and controled by money. Who gives a flying f*ck if your Mother Theresa anymore, if youre dirt poor--you're nothing. So then its a fairly simple answer why society is money crazy these days--it's because money is power, and without power, you're just another nobody. It's true that the system is completely flawed, but it's just the way the cookie crumbled. |

I know what you mean. California is the absolute worst, too. If an intruder breaks into your house and hurts themselves, they can sue you. Isn't that just amazing?
I don't have a problem with people wanting to get money, but when they get it in the most outrageous ways, it's kind of a let down. People have really sunk low to get money too.
Also, if someone rear-ends you (in a car). It's your fault. Doesn't matter if you were at a complete stop or not. How nice is that? I've seen it happen too. And during the Christmas season; better watch out for what's behind the other cars cause some people will come plowing through and collect because YOU were the one backing up, making a dangerous menuver.
Having money isn't bad. If you worked hard for it, then you deserve it. But if you screw someone up the ass for it, it's just low. People have gotten into the "me, myself, and I" mind-set, and I'm afraid that we aren't ever going to get out of it. |

Well isn't this a productive thread?
Let's all congregate on an internet site and nag about societies many faults. Quite a waste of time - if you ask me. It's a given that society is greedy and that everyone sues at the drop of a hat. Furthermore, if people want to be completely shallow and ruin people’s lives because of their own stupidity, I'm almost certain that they'll get what's coming at them. As what you sow is what you reap.
Solomon the wise has made a very valid point in Ecclesiastes. "For in this life you came with nothing, and so you will leave with nothing." Materialistic morons can take whatever they want, but they can't take what's most important in life.
However, there is no point sitting your ass on a computer, being belligerent about the world and it's countless faults. Stop whinging. If you're so vehement about what you believe, gather some fellow parishioners and go protest, go make a petition and get it signed. Otherwise I'd recommend you do something that's more productive and stop being so damn fervent - to no avail. |

I completely disagree. If it's possible to persuade people to be more productive, we'd probably be living in a better world. To the sacrifice of one's time, in order to prevent others for doing the same, to me seems quite constructive.
But go ahead, inflate yourself, have the last word (however invalid and ridiculous), that's all you're good for right? You keep reassuring me that I'm right in having the opinion if have of you. |
