The importance of censorship or lack thereof

Censorship is used, supposedly, to protect others whether that be to protect their feelings or to protect them from harmful truth. Even on forums, they have a closing ability, deleting ability and editting ability.
Do you feel that censorship is a good thing or that it's, in fact, more harmful in it's hiding of issues? |

In most cases censorship hides the truth that's too hard to swallow, however, without it you can easily see exactly what a person is.
It takes balance to keep everyone happy, I think censorship is ridiculous, someone elses morals aren't meant to be fed to others, yet, they somehow are. |

Well, here's my oppinion that is quite general and Censorship probably falls in here somewhere.
If you try to please everyone, you will end up offending everybody. So offend everybody, that way no one will feel left out. |

| We don't really close and lock things for the sake of shutting someone up. Some things just aren't appropriate or relative to most discussions here. We don't like people posting porn links, because that entertains no one but themself, and the reaction of recoil and panic is what we don't want to feed them, so we silence their thread. Spamming, off topic derailments, flaming, it really serves no purpose and proves no intellectual ideal or opinion, and this isn't just some AOL chat to say whatever the hell you want, what we like to encourage is actual content, not plain words. |

| Now, in this case, (Look out Mecanon! I'm agreeing with you!) I'm fully in favour of the sensorship that goes on here. This is a specific Board with a specific goal and you agree to follow it's rules when you join and post. If you don't, you are silenced or banned. Which ever. Where I am not in favour of sensorship, is when it is on the news or comming from a government that claims to be democratic. |

Censorship trying to shut people up or cram your morals down someone's throat is wrong, and I quote that god-awful game Alpha Centauri in saying "He who seeks to withhold information from you, seeks to control you."
But theres another part of censorship, and that is preventing children from easily seeing something they shouldn't be subjected to. Its up to parents what children should and shouldn't know in the realm of sex and violence, and mass media needs to hold some kind of decency. And don't give me that **** about you should monitor your child better and make sure they don't learn these things; Locking your kids into a closet until they're 16 is not a parenting plan. |

I don't agree with censorship at all. Its a serious infringment on one's rights. I can understand FFR's policy of closing unneccesary topics, but on many occasions, people were banned for what they merely said (coughSanosukecough). So per your response Mecanon it I said somethign like:
Afterlab's a jackass who runs complete idiots....
Would that be deleted? Would I be banned? I recall times at FFR were I would be. In fact, I was banned from FFR by posting that Final Fantasy was gay. |

| You won't be banned, but that's a personal attack, something with really no place in a civil discussion. You'd probably get a warning, and be shunned by most of the staff for saying something so broad and uninsightful, but banned? I would call that overreacting. It's obvious from most of your posts you've got intelligent things to say, but for the most part, those who spam and flame are just rebellious idiots, and we deal with them accordingly. Personally, I think you should be able to say whatever the hell you want about anything, but most people don't enjoy being insulted themselves, and overall satisfaction and order would have to come before your rights alone. |
