Where to start?... Well, this may explain a little. And then afterwards, I'll fill in the blanks or any questions you have. This is an outline of what Fran (my "partner") and I will say to our principal tomorrow morning.
Quote:
- Last week we had our first round of 30 Seconds to Fame. In it, Raymond not only pulled a chain from his nose through his mouth, but also shoved quarters up his nose and a pen up his nasal cavities.
- At that point in time, there was no problem. Fran and I were not given a lecture. We were, in fact, applauded at what we did and how good it turned out at Monday’s Student Council meeting, and not just by fellow students and Student Council members, but also our TA’s
- As well, we were not told about any one “crossing the line” at Monday’s meeting after the first 30 Seconds to Fame – despite the similarities between Raymond’s “pen stunt” and his “nail stunt.” After yesterday’s 30 Second to Fame, we were talked to by an unnamed teacher about us “crossing the line.”
- On Thursday, we witnessed Raymond shoving nails up his nasal cavities. The hammer was simply used as a form of entertainment. The hammer, in and of itself, was not used to hammer the nails into his skull or up his nose, nor was it used as a weapon of any sort.
- Raymond did tell us of what he was going to do about 2 or 3 minutes before he came up. The decision which we made was split-second, and the responsibility of deciding what is and what is not shown was put on our shoulders, by no fault of our own, or his. Last week, it was a surprise, and the TA’s were fine with that. We figured there would be no problem again this time, and that we could trust him, much the same way teachers and ourselves trusted him last week.
- This was simply an act that did go wrong. However, we believe that it was nobody’s fault and that no one person should be punished. Perhaps there could have been things that were done differently, but to punish people for something that was beyond anybody else’s control is not something that we feel is justified.
- We do feel that the student body was not affected by what Raymond did. The crowd was cheering and laughing at what was happening. When your announcement was made later on in the day, Fran in her class and me in my class both felt awkward, as our peers and teachers looked directly at us, asking for an explanation, or simply saying that they were not traumatized by what had happened.
- In conclusion, we hope that this does not affect future Wacky Wednesday’s that Fran and I, along with Students’ Council puts on. We only wish to remember this contained incident, learn from it, and move on.
- So what have we learned? Basically, expect the unexpected and to weigh the pros and cons of decisions that must be made quickly. We apologize for the havoc this has caused for the Admin and teachers, and we hope to work together in the future in terms of any more probably "risky" Wacky Wednesdays.
|
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Couple of more notes, which are otherwise understood between myself, Fran and our principal:
Raymond was suspended for one day
TA's are the Students' Council "Teacher Advisors," and "Admin" is short form for administration (principals, etc.)
We are going as Fran and Joel, and we are not representing the Students' Council in any way, shape or form.
Raymond did "bleed." But he had a blood capsule up his nose, which nobody knew about beforehand.
Raymond has since been suspended and his parents were phoned and told that he self-mutilates and is mentally unbalanced.
What do you think? Do we have a strong point? Are we justified in what we are saying? Are we saying it the right way? |

I truly hate public education. The system is antiquted and no longer to date with the times. It is also extremely uneffiecient and childish. Student Council is one of those factors that contributes to such a ****ty school system.
The student council is nothing more than a giant popularity contest. At my former highschool, I never once saw the position go to a highly intellegent person. They just couldn't win against the popular kids running; It's a true joke.
I ran for a position in middle school, and was at the top of my class. My speach was extremely well done, but I lost. My qualifications were higher than ALL other canidates, and my speaking skills were obviously miles about them. However, the most ghetto kid who passed out the most candy one. It's a complete ****ing joke, and the student council holds no power or choice in the schools.
They simply meet together once a week, kiss the administations ass and get NOTHING done. I've actually watched a meeting. Most of the council drank coke while chatting about gossip. I went to ONE dance in highschool, that's all I needed to re-assure the fact that all school dances are poorly organized, terribly planned, and I won't even comment on the HORRIBLE music selection. I wouldn't mind the concept of student council if the council actually had the power to DO THINGS and were elected by MERIT and speaking skills.
Here's the lesson you learned: DONT ACT LIKE A DUMBASS FOR FAME AND POPULARITY.
This is a clear example of why the concept of student council is stupid. I'm sorry but I wouldn't want people who SHOVE OBJECTS UP THERE NOSES like idiots to represent me on school related issues. The sad part of this is your motives behind it. Such stupid acts just for the temporary boost in popularity. Good job kiddies, I hope you feel like a real big man now. I'm sure a great deal of pride goes along with your social label, "Hey!! It's the kid who can shove nails up his nose."
I mean no offense, but your friends actions are just stupid. Shoving a Quarter up your nose? I don't know about you, but the first thing I think of is the word dumbass. I'm glad he got suspended, and I think whenever someone shows their ass in such an idiotic manner it should happen. |

Get educated before you start speaking out of your ass again. Fact is, the most popular kids DON'T run for Students' Council at my school. Not only that, but we have a "price limit." Which means, we can't spend over x amounts of dollars when buying candy, and art stuff for our posters, etc. Furthermore, to be on Students' Council, you must have and maintain an above 70% average, and fail NO courses.
So it's not a popularity contest for the "stupider" kids. It's something that I take pride and honour in, in that I was elected and in that I can raise school spirit.
And if it was based solely on popularity, we wouldn't have the president we have right now.

We must meet once a week, and we get so much **** done, and we sit down and focus and get the work done. Even after we stay focused, we are still there for nearly two hours trying to make school a little more fun.
Dances aren't unorganized - we book the DJ(s) well in advance (at LEAST a month), start decorating the night before, advertise two weeks before and sell tickets the week of the dance and the night of the dance. We have a very structural system in terms of kids from other high schools coming to our dances, which involves our students signing in other students.

I'm not doing this for fame or popularity, I'm doing it so my school experience can be a little more fun. I'm doing it to raise school spirit. I'm doing it as a form of entertainment, so school isn;t boring for everybody else. That's my main job on Students' Council as Social and Public Relations Coordinator.

It was a FUN CONTEST. It was something different, because school ISN'T all about learning and books and getting the best grades. It's also about having fun, making friends and just letting loose and relaxing sometimes.

It was something fun. The whole competition was surrounded by the fact that people got up there and did stupid things to try to win the "30 Seconds to Fame" competition.
You repeatedly say, "all" dances, or imply that all schools are exactly like yours.
Stop being so jealous and ignorant and grow up. |

I can thank a mentality like that for the retarded trends in school systems. SCHOOL IS ***NOT*** MEANT TO BE FUN. It's a place you ****ing go to LEARN. L-E-A-R-N. If you're not learning in school, your time is being wasted severely.

You're telling ME I need to grow up? When you SUPPORT and ENDORSE people who shove objects up their nose during a time intended for EDUCATION? You're telling ME to grow up? ROFL ELOHEL. I am in NO WAY jealous of someone who takes pride in shoving objects in their nose, and then basks the limelight of ignorance the morons of the student body shine on them.

Yes, you meet once a week! Oh boy, you might get a nice dance planned. HOWEVER, Do you do ANYTHING to improve the real needs of the students and the ciriculem? Do you solve problems like not enough lockers, OR JUST BUY CANDY? Do you improve the EDUCATION aspect of school at ALL? I seriously dobut it, student council is a pathetic concept.
Also, I seriously dobut the student base of your school is mature enough to elect off of qualifications. Children just can't vote in an unbiased manner 3/4 times. |

You failed to notice the word "also" which I placed in front of the "having fun..." sentence. I know full well that school's primary function is for us to learn. But while we're there, we may as well have fun, go out for sports teams or volunteer doing something we love... All of which is fun, and a crucial part of growing up. Through our various activities, besides learning and studying, in high school, we grow as human beings. Because when you're out in the real world, that fact that you had perfect attendance and a 96% average won't really matter - it's what else you've learned, in terms of treating other people, your social skills and your personality - that is, if you have any.

'Twas during lunch hour that this event took place (not a time intended for education). And at no time did I endorse it, or support it. I'm simply stating that he should not be suspended for it, because he did the same thing last week and admin supported us and applauded us for a job well done and at the turn out of the event.

Students' Council's main function is not to worry about those things, but to raise school spirit and add something new into our school each year. It is the admin.'s and school board's job to worry about raising education. You have a different perspective of what a Students' Council's job is - which is, sorry to say, a wrong one.

Our school president has been tormented and taunted about his sexuality ever since he came into high school. He's constantly made fun of for his voice, the way he dresses and even the way his hair is done. He went up against a popular girl who had the right clothes, right hair, right personality. But she didn't do much for her campaign. She expected the votes to come her way because she was popular. Tyler worked hard, did NOT give out candy, and was still elected as president. |

Let me get this straight Yoel. You create a thread to complain of the student council at your school, Elvaan complains about the student council at his own former school, and you call him "ignorant" and tell him to "grow up". Your arguments are more outdated than the circus tricks you consider "entertainment".
There's always going to be a certain amount of opression in schools, some things just really aren't appropriate. But I agree, it can be taken too far. Point in case, our school talent show, when a group came on stage and the crowd began cheering and standing up when the curtains were pulled. The next week we find the group was suspended for enciting enthusiasm from the crowd. I guess you're just not allowed to show spirit unless it's for the school. The only reason I would know anyone to join student council is for something flashy to put on a college application, you get public service hours for most of the activities. Then again, some people just want to "change the system D00dz" but if the illegalization of cell phones and enforced uniform policies of my own school has taught me anything, it's that rebellion is just a waste of time.
By the way, you're free to insult someone's point, but if you start getting more personal than you already are, this thread will be instantly closed. Don't be so defensive Yoel, Elvaan always posts like this. |
