Balamb Gardens
Come here to reflect and talk about serious issues, voice your opinions and get things off your chest. Solve other peoples problems and have your own worries eased. Spamming and flaming is NOT tolerated.

I would like to remind anyone that you are free to create threads pertaining to any of the specifications mentioned above. I've noticed some derailed threads in Balamb Gardens in my time, and I'd like to set some new rules into effect that will keep this particular sub-forum intellectual, insightful, on topic, and respectful.
1) No one word responses. This goes against any real sort of discussion rules. Yes, you can have an opinion that simply agrees or disagrees with the subject at hand, but I'm sure the other members of the discussion would like to know your reasoning, some means of coming to your opinion, something they can think about.
2) No reply without an explanation or the purpose and thought behind it. I'm perfectly fine with short replies, as long as they make sense and have some sort of ground. Like I say, you're free to have an opinion, but what I'm looking for is why do you have that opinion and/or how did you come to it. I would really like to encourage those who post here to share as much content on the particular threads they post on as possible, it makes for a much more interesting discussion, and cuts down on spam and chatter.
3) No personal attacks. I, along with any of the other moderators, will simply not tolerate blatant personal attacks. They have no real value to any sort of discussion, and if you want to have an unrelated dispute with someone take it to the PM's. Never let something like that spill onto the boards, it will be deleted or edited on sight. It's something that has no value to anyone but you, and this place is not for self-serving conversations.
4) Refrain from going off-topic. The threads have titles for a reason. You are free to express whatever you wish in a reply, as long as it caters to the topic being discussed, or the topic that the entire conversation itself has moved to. For example: if a discussion about gun control leads to a talk about war, that is perfectly fine by me, as long as you don't take it to something totally different, and you all focus on the same subject.
5) No spam, plain and simple. You can have valid opinions coming out of your ears, but anything off-topic, obviously inappropriate, or just lacking in any sort of thought at all I consider spam, and will be disposed of.
6) When making a thread, indicate with the title the subject being discussed. Avoid broad titles like "Do you believe...", or things VERY open to interpretation or continued within the thread itself.
7) Try not to create a new thread that has already existed. Things like "love" and "religion" are posted very often, and chances are the original thread isn't even off the first or second page. Please revive these instead of creating entirely new threads yourself.
8) Do not use a thread or the content within as your personal spring board to make jokes. You may notice most threads in Balamb Gardens are relatively serious, thus condesending and pretentious arrogance and verbal humility will be deleted on sight, more hastily so if they are off topic and irrelevant.
9) Treat Balamb Gardens differently than you would any other forum. It is a place for intellectual discussion and meaningful input, not petty chat and pitiful self reassurance. If you want attention, or even just somewhere to talk for the hell of it, this really isn't the place.
10) When replying to a thread, make sure you have read every single reply to that thread. This may seem like a chore for some, but I find that when people jump into a debate or discussion with no prior knowledge of what has been discussed and resolved within the course of the previous replies will end up repeating a topic, or just posting an irrelevant opinion with no actual adherance to the subject at hand.
I really enjoy reading Balamb Gardens, and the things a good deal of you have to say. As long as you follow these simple and somewhat implied rules, Balamb will be easily clean and maintained, and remain a place for intelligent debate and discussion for anyone who would like to participate.

PENALTIES
One liner posts are something that I cannot tolerate, especially in this forum. This is a place for serious discussion, and let us keep it that way. For that I am implementing penalties for those who keep posting one-liners, especially those which do not make any sense or hardly contribute to the topic.
1st offense: Post is edited with my remarks.
2nd offense: Post is edited, this time with an Unofficial Warning.
3rd and succeeding offenses: One Official Warning.
Flaming is another thing that I will not condone. If I see any blatant attacks on members in this forum, an automatic Official Warning will be issued.
Again, these rules are here for a purpose - to keep Balamb Gardens the way it is. |
