Newbie Sparring Rules.
Welcome to the Sparring Tutorial. Here, I am going to explain to you some of the basics of sparring, along with a short guide to creating a character of your own for sparring purposes.
Ok, I am going to start off with the rules that most fights here will be using:
Rules:
-Kills
-Most fights will either have ‘No Kills’ or have a determined number of posts before kills can be in effect.
EX: No Kills Until 30 Posts.
-This simply means that you may not kill your opponent until after the 30th post. If you kill the 30th post, then your opponent will most likely complain and either you will be disqualified, or he will just kick your ass. Most fights do not have more than 20-30 posts in the entire battle, depending on the length of the posts for each fighter. If the battle is well described and the fighters take their time, the fight can last for a long period of time.
Fights with the ‘No Kill’ rule usually have a set number of posts for the battle to last, then will either have a set of unbiased judges decide who won the fight based on how well they fought. Sometimes it is not even necessary for judges, as the victor is easily distinguished by his overall description and creativity.
-Modding
-Some sparrers do not like the idea of ‘modding’. Modding is defined as ‘defining the damage caused by your attack upon your opponent’. If you were to post something like this:
-EX: *Ten leaps towards Avarice, his left arm drawn back, forming a fist. As he closes in on his foe, Ten swiftly drives his arm forward, pummeling Avarice in the face with a solid left hook. The warrior is stunned by the punch, as he stumbles backwards, losing his balance.*
That is considered modding. There are two types of modding.
-Modding: Defining any damage dealt to your foe. Even landing a single punch is considered modding. The only time one can define the damage is when you, yourself are dealt a blow. You can determine how much damage your character is dealt. Several other rules will affect this as well.
-Extreme Modding: Defining some damage is acceptable when using this rule, but the use of ‘Delimbing’ and horrendous damage is not acceptable. Breaking your opponents bones, or the use of a great deal of blood is frowned upon. There are some exceptions to this rule, which will be discussed further later.
-Delimbing: Delimbing is considered breaking your enemies bones or literally cutting the limbs off of their body. When this rule is in effect, usually any of the modding rules are thrown out of the window. Some sparrers like to combine the two rules, only allowing the Delimbing rule to come into affect at a certain number of posts.
-The Power Rules (The Powah Rulzzz )
-There are three special rules that have been developed over time by several great sparrers. These rules, when used properly, will give the better sparrer the advantage in battle.
-Description=Power: When using this rule, the fighter who uses the most description will have the strongest attacks, giving him the advantage in battle. Describing everything about your attack and the surrounding area will help boost the power of the entire post. Simply saying:
-EX: *Ten’s punches Avarice*
Will not be nearly as effective if you were to post:
-EX: *Ten sprints forth towards his opposing warrior, Avarice. With every step the silver haired warrior takes, a cloud of dust is thrown into the air, creating a thin cloud of debris behind him as he runs, slowing growing larger with every powerful step taken by Ten. As the two warriors near one another, Ten swiftly draws his right arm behind his head, creating a tightly grasped fist. A split second later, his fist is thrown forward, with the force of a locomotive, before it is driven directly into Avarice’s brow, causing his head to snap back like a slingshot.*
-Quality>Quantity: Using this rule gives the best writer the advantage. Using a lot of description is not enough. You must use correct grammar, which consists of proper punctuation, spelling, and using words properly. You can have 3 pages for your attack, with a decent amount of description, but if your opponent has 1 page of quality writing, with a fair amount of description, but uses an extensive vocabulary, along with PROPER grammar, then you will not win. Quality is the key to winning, not just simple description.
-Creativity=Massive Power: Creativity gives your posts even more power. Simply using melee attacks (Punch, Kick, etc.), along with ’DragonBallZ’ type moves, such as Kamehameha’ will not suffice in battle. Creating your own techniques and attacks will boost your power, especially when the fight is being judged. Using a character from any T.V. shows such as DBZ or any other anime will hinder you creativity from the beginning of the fight.
Combining all of these rules will result in a massive amount of power for your attacks, most likely along with a victory over your opponent.
-Weapons
-Most fights will allow the use of weapons throughout the entire battle, but sometimes you may not use them until a certain post number. Nearly any type of weapon that you wish to use, you may, as long as it does not instantly kill your foe. Be sure to describe your weapon to the T, especially if you don’t have a picture. Using your weapon effectively will help you gain an advantage in battle, sometimes even winning the battle.
-Healing
-In almost all fights, some sort of healing is allowed, especially in ‘Vet’ battles. Some newbies would use Sensu Beans, but No Vets will be caught dead using them. In some special cases, the rules will state that either Sensu Beans, or any type of healing is illegal. If so, then you are incapable of healing what so ever, even when transforming. If you are missing an arm before a transformation, then you are missing it afterwards. It’s as simple as that. Many fighters, like myself, use magic to heal themselves. Describing EVERYTHING about the procedure allows the heal to take full effect. The more description, the more effective the heal.
-Transformations
-As would be expected, nearly every fight has at least one transformation within them. This tends to add depth and makes the fight much more interesting. Once again, description is the key to this. Simply saying you transform is definitely not enough. You MUST describe every thing that happens, along with how your character’s features have changed after the transformation. Some fighters will not alow transformation during the fight, but that’s ok. It is not essential to transform, even if it is allowed. Transforming to much will effect the outcome of the battle, especially when being judged. Someone who transformed three times, is going to be deducted against someone who transforms once.
--------------------------------------------
Those are the basics of the main set of rules used AT THIS forum. This does not mean these rules are excepted at other sparring boards, it just simply means, that at this board, the blunt of most fights will use these rules.
