Verali Daine Kryer (commonly known as Daine) had often thought about how her Lord, the Dictator, had come into power. Had he inherited his position, from another Dictator? Had the Unknown appeared to him? Or had he taken it by force?

As a young werewolf, Daine had often been told the story told to all wolves. As the story goes, Citadel had been in a bloody state of warfare, ruled by an evil, nameless lord. The Unknown, creator of Citadel, had guided the Dictator in a quest to set Citadel to rights. The Dictator had killed many of the evil lord’s army, before finally plunging his sword into the ruler himself. He then claimed the ruling position, and brought peace to Citadel.

She had bought this story as a child, but now knew, at the age of seventeen, that the story was little more than a fairy tale. The facts didn’t fit. She supposed it was to instill respect into young wolves. It had worked for her. She was the most loyal werewolf that would ever be created by the Dictator’s team of scientists would ever create, she made sure of it. She always followed his orders to the very letter, almost blatantly refusing to do anything that he hadn’t specified or ordered her to do. She killed anyone that ignored his existence, or wouldn’t follow orders.

Now, walking through the dark hallways of the complex right next to the Dictator’s chambers, where the Enforcers, the elite, resided, Daine’s mind was set on following the new orders the Dictator had just given her. The clacking of her tall, high-heeled boots echoed against stone walls as her mind flashed to the meeting that had taken place just a few minutes before.

“I have arrived, Sir,” Daine murmured, dropping to her knees. Long ringlets of black hair fell over her shoulders, touching the stone floor. Slowly raising her eyes, she could barely make out the outline of the Dictator against the shadows of the room.

“The female soul among my Enforcers,” he replied, a small lilt in his baritone voice. “I am very pleased that you have been devoting yourself to destroying all of the Pures, as I commanded.” At this, she smiled. “However, I do not believe you have been properly serving me. You have been obsessing over finding and destroying the Pures, and are letting rumored rebellions grow and thrive.” Now, she frowned.

“But, Sir,” she objected, lifting her head. “I thought it was your intention to destroy the Pure, and let neurocorrosis roam free, to cleanse Citadel of impurities. Please, let me-“

He held up a hand to silence her. “It is my intention to destroy the Pure Ones. But it is of no use to me if you are wandering around, waiting for more Pure to be discovered, or using all your time and energy trying to find them. I will be sending you to an area in the coastal region, outside the Port of Hearts. You are to put down a particularly nasty revolt, word of which has just reached my ear. And,” his eyes glinted, “there is a Pure there. Now, leave.”

The meeting had been like any other one, minimal conversation, but to her, something seemed…different. But enough of that. She had her mission. Nothing would get in her way of completing her mission, and fulfilling the Dictator’s wishes. Her cold brown eyes looked ahead, and she walked outside, into the blinding sunlight.

She was in a field, behind the Dictator’s palace, a place that only wolves could enter. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. It would be much faster to go as a wolf, instead of a human. Long hair sprouted from her skin as she crouched, low. Her face elongated, forming a snout, and her ears became pointed. A tail grew, and claws extended. When the process was complete, she bared her teeth. Nothing will prevent me from doing as I was ordered she chanted in her head.

She began running, so fast she was a blur.
